Robert Lee Senter, age 89, passed away on Sunday, July 7th in San Antonio. He was born on December 6th, 1929 to his parents, William and Gertrude Senter in Erwin, Tennessee. Robert (Bob) graduated from Unicoi County High school in Erwin, TN in 1948, while in high school he played varsity basketball and baseball.

He graduated from East Tennessee State College (now University) in 1952 with a B.S. in Geography and a minor in History. He began employment with the U.S. Army Map Service in October 1952, after nearly a year in training in Photogrammetry; he began fieldwork in many areas of the United States. While on assignment in Olympia Washington he met his wife-to-be, Ferol Fisher and they married in October of 1959. After a stint in Washington DC, Bob transferred to the Inter-American Geodetic Survey (IAGS) and with his young family moved to Lima, Peru in 1962 where he worked in training Peruvian nationals in photogrammetric mapping. A year of graduate study at Ohio State followed in 1967, then a short assignment in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1969, Bob was selected as the IAGS project chief for Costa Rica, a position he held until 1978. After another short assignment in Panama, Bob and his family moved to San Antonio in June, 1980 with the relocation of IAGS Headquarters to that city.

He attended the Inter-American Defense College, Ft. Myer, VA, during the school year 1980-81, his thesis, REMOTE SENSING: A TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPMENT IN LATIN AMERICA. Bob finished his mapping career with IAGS/Defense Mapping Agency in June 1992. Retirement brought opportunities to study, particularly the Education for Ministry (EFM) Seminar from The University of the South, Sewanee, TN, which he completed and served as a Mentor. He was also an instructor and coordinator for the AARP Driver Safety Program for North East Bexar County. Church activities have been important, too, Bob has served as an Usher, as well as member of the Vestry at Church of the Good Shepherd, Lima, Peru; The Cathedral of St Luke, Ancon, Panama Canal Zone; Church of the Good Shepherd, San Jose, Costa Rica; and finally the Church of the Resurrection, San Antonio, TX

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Ferol Senter; son Bill Senter and wife Carlene, daughter Valerie Senter Williams and husband Jim; grandchildren Robert Senter and Carlita Marchitto

A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 10am at the Church of the Resurrection Episcopal Church - 5909 Walzem Rd, San Antonio, TX 78218. The Rev. Chris Cole will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Resurrection or the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio.
