Condolence & Memory Journal

I was so sorry to hear of Mark's passing. He had a major influence on my life back at South San and I can lay the blame for me going into Chemistry on no one else. Prayers and best wishes.
Alex.

Mr. Scheffler and I became acquainted through the N.E. Student Council Association. I was the sponsor at Madison H.S. and he was Associate Supt. with Student Council under him. We worked on many projects such as the All District Anti-Drug Rally and many, many meetings with our local student councils and the District and State committees. I learned so much from him and will be forever grateful for all the help he gave us. Everyone who knew him respected and loved him. My prayers go out to the family. God Bless a Great Man and his family.

We were principals in the same cluster and had respect for each other. We became part of the the "6th floor" and I appreciated that we could disagree behind closed doors but when the door opened, we respected our positions and did not interfere with what each had to do. He called me "Maw" so he became "Paw." He made a difference for so many people. Carol and Brian suffered along with him all these months and I pray that they will now experience that "peace that passes all understanding." Love you, Mark.

When I became superintendent in Northside ISD I became acquainted with Mark through Richard Middleton. When I would attend football games at Blossom when a Northside team was playing a Northeast team, I would always get to talk with Mark in the press box. I enjoyed so much my conversations with him, and especially talking about sports and things going on in education. I learned what a knowledgeable person he was, but also what a kind heart and the compassion he had for students. Although I did not work with Mark, I heard so many wonderful things about him as a school administrator. I know he will be missed, but know that I thought a lot of him not only as a school person, but as a kind, compassionate, and concerned person for kids. My prayers and thought are with the family!

Carol and Family: Please accept our sincere condolences. Harry has many fond memories of attending both Highlands High School and Southwest Texas State University with Mark and later working with him at South San Antonio ISD for several years. We shared some fun times (B.K-before kids) and I was honored to be a part of Carol and Mark's wedding party. We were all proud of Mark's many accomplishments in education and working with him when he was Principal of Churchill HS where are daughters attended. May God comfort you with many happy memories.

Mark touched more lives than most of us can imagine: students, their parents, teachers and staffs, colleagues and associates. There was never a doubt that his first consideration was always what was best for the students. He held himself to high standards and expected the same of his associates. He was unfailingly supportive though no nonsense in encouraging his colleagues. He will be sorely missed as a mentor and a friend. May God hold him and his family in the palm of His hand.

Condolences to Dr.Scheffler's family. He was my principal at Churchill High School, class of 1995. He was a cool principal and you could tell he really cared about the students. I would frequently go into his office and chat with him. I would sit down and put my feet up on his desk and ask how his day was. HAHA, who does that & what principal allows that?! I was an athlete and the ladies basketball didn't get much support from the administration which I expressed to him and after that he started showing up to our games! It seemed like Dr Scheffler knew every student at our high school.

Our deepest condolences to the Scheffler family. Mark worked along side my father, James Calhoun, for many years at South San High School. My father thought the world of Mark and enjoyed seeing Mark grow into an outstanding school administrator and leader. My father mentioned to me many times how very proud he was of all that Mark accomplished in his career and in helping so many students across San Antonio reach their full potential. Most of all, my father considered Mark to be a close friend who enjoyed many laughs together. On a personal note, Mark helped me and my family through a very difficult time when my father passed several years ago and I will always remember him for that support. I know my dad and Mark will be enjoying many more laughs together in Heaven.

I started my first year of teaching with Mark in 1970 when we were new in the profession at South San. I knew him as my principal at Churchill. And I knew him as an Associate Superintendent for NEISD in dealing with district issues. He was always, over those decades, the same congenial and quintessential professional who made me feel good as a teacher, knowing he cared deeply about the students. An exceptional human being!

Larry and I had the pleasure of meeting Mark only once, but we knew him well through our son, Kevin, who was best friends with Marks son, Brian. Mark must have had incredible patience and a world class sense of humor to put up with those kids. Our son admired Mark very much, and they had a great relationship which meant a great deal to Kevin. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Carol, Brian and the rest of the family. Mark was a source of encouragement and strength for so many.

I will be forever grateful for his leadership and his friendship. I am praying for God's love and peace to Carol, Brian and family, and all of Mark's family. Rest in peace, Dr. Scheffler.
