Tribute & Message From The Family

Herb Kelleher, the fun-loving and wickedly witty Founder, Chairman Emeritus, and former CEO of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co., died Thursday, January 3, 2019. He was 87.

Herbert David Kelleher was born March 12, 1931, in Camden, New Jersey, and was reared in nearby Audubon, New Jersey, where he graduated from Haddon Heights High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University where he was an Olin Scholar, majoring in English, with a minor in philosophy. While at Wesleyan, Herb served as the president of the student body and excelled in numerous sports, and it was there that he met and fell in love with Joan Negley, who was attending Connecticut College at the time. Following graduation, Herb and Joan married and lived in New York while Herb attended law school at New York University, where he was a Root-Tilden Scholar. Herb was a self-made man, putting himself through school with scholarships and his unparalleled work ethic. He took that work ethic with him when he moved to Joan's home state of Texas, a place that he grew to love and cherish.

Hundreds of millions of Americans likely owe their first flight to the era of affordable air travel that Herb and Rollin King helped launch in the late 1960s on a cocktail napkin in a San Antonio hotel bar. He oversaw and personally fought numerous legal battles instigated by competitors who tried to ground the very idea of Southwest Airlines before its first flights took off in 1971 with a fleet of just three airplanes. Through decades of challenges and growth, Herb's infectious personality motivated the airline's Employees to build Brand loyalty in Customers that bolstered one of the world's most admired companies with decades of consistent profitability. And the original Texas triangle of destinations on that cocktail napkin remains at the heart of nearly 90 US destinations served by what is the now largest airline in the United States. The successful and magic mix of making flying both fun and reliable can be traced directly back to Herb's larger than life personality that shaped and galvanized a workforce around the gold standard of Customer Service in air travel by institutionalizing The Golden Rule.

Herb served as Southwest Airlines Executive Chairman from March 1978 to May 2008 and as President and CEO from September 1981 through June 2001. Fortune magazine, which consistently recognizes Southwest among the world's top 10 most admired companies, called Herb perhaps the Best CEO in America.

Herb received numerous awards and honors, including the U. S. Chamber Business Leadership Hall of Fame; CEO of the Year and one of history's top three CEOs, Chief Executive magazine; CEO of the Century, Texas Monthly magazine; National Sales and Marketing Hall of Fame; CEO of the Decade-Airline Industry; Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy; Bower Award for Business Leadership, Franklin Institute; Tony Jannus Award; Wings Club Distinguished Achievement Award; San Diego Aerospace Hall of Fame; L. Welch Pogue Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aviation, Aviation Week; Airline Business Award, Airline Business magazine; 2005 Global Services Leader Award; History Making Texan Award; the Business Halls of Fame of the State of Texas, the University of Texas, Texas A&M, and the City of Dallas; the Herbert D. Kelleher Servant Leader Scholarship, named in Herb's honor by the Austin Business Travel Association; induction into the Texas Labor Management Hall of Fame; induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame; induction into the Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine, Wright Brothers National Memorial; recipient of the Department of Homeland Security Distinguished Public Service Medal; an honorary lifetime member of the Transport Workers Union; recipient of full page USA Today "Thank You Herb!" ad from Southwest's Pilots union; induction into the AAF Tenth District Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame; Ronald McDonald House Charities Award of Excellence; induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame, and, most recently, induction into the American Advertising Federation Hall of Fame and the Entrepreneurs For North Texas' Ring of Entrepreneurs. In 2014, Herb was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Princeton University.

In July 2010, Herb was appointed Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas board of directors. He continued to serve on numerous advisory and governance boards late in life, including the National Air and Space Museum, and Homeland Security and Advisory Council.

Herb, as he was called by the 63,000-plus current Employees of Southwest Airlines, the Company's Retirees, and even Customers and admirers of the business and cultural legacy he created and nurtured for decades, often said in recent years he was 'flunking retirement' as he continued to maintain an office at the Company's Love Field Headquarters.

Herb's vocabulary often challenged those around him to find a dictionary to decipher the layers of meaning that he beautifully conveyed in a quip or quote across a gamut of topics on which he regularly and voraciously read. He used a steel trap mind to catalogue thousands of names and faces, and he would never pass a chance to say hello, share a story or a joke, plant a kiss on the lips or give a warm hug. His laughter and legacy linger in the hallowed halls of the Company he built; his vision takes hold in the Leaders he shaped; his compassion and character resonate in the workforce he motivated.

Herb relished his private time with his family, who loved and adored him. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Negley Kelleher, along with three of their four children, Michael Kelleher, Ruth Agather, and David Kelleher, and their spouses, Lisa Kelleher, John Agather, Kathy Kelleher, and son-in-law Dennis Stacy. He's also survived by his nine grandchildren (who lovingly called him Poppair), Kevin Stacy, Clara Kelleher, Caroline Kelleher, Michael Kelleher, Jack Agather, Merrilee Agather, Danny Kelleher, Maggie Kelleher and Mollie Kelleher, and numerous nieces and nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Stacy; his parents, Ruth and Harry Kelleher; his brothers, Harry and Richard Kelleher, and his sister, Ruth Adams.

The family wishes to thank Colleen Barrett, Melinda Russ and Vickie Shuler for the love and care they gave to Herb.

A private burial will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, followed by a service of remembrance for friends and family at Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap Place, San Antonio, Texas, at 3:00 p.m. that same day.

A public Celebration of Life will be conducted at a later date in Dallas, Texas.

Donations in Herb's memory may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, M.D. Anderson, or a charity of one's choice.

I just learned of Herb's passing in the recent issue of Southwest Magazine while travelling home from NY.
For over 30 years I have been a loyal SW passenger due mainly to the way I have been treated by Southwest staff. This corporate culture emanates from the larger than life leader that Lived and demonstrated love, compassion, and genuinely enjoyed people. What a life!

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the Kelleher family. Grief can be very difficult. I hope knowing that you're in the thoughts and prayers of many bring a measure of comfort. We look forward to time when all things that cause sickness and death will be eradicated by God's Kingdom. Matthew 6:9,10. May your sorrows gently fade away.

Thank you Herb for founded Southwest Airlines. I am a southwest rapid rewards member/frequent flyer and worked for usps(nov 1965- sept 2017) at Lindbergh field, (SAN) from 1979-2007 and Southwest hauled mail for many years. I remember those $19 flights SAN-LAS. we called him 'Uncle Herbie' for when he bought an airline and gained SLC and headlines were 'Uncle Herbie and Aunt Bea got married' referring to the merger of the two airlines. enjoyed his book 'nuts' too. He made air travel fun with puggy plane stuffed toy and peanuts and brightly colored planes for different states etc. . I have traveled a lot to Australia and Fiji via SFO and would go SAN-SFO on SWA to catch QANTAS and around the western states on SWA. Herbie was one in a million and will be truly missed by family, friends employees and us passengers. I still have a red heart SWA key chain that is over 20 years old.

Herb must've been a truly amazing boss to have touched so many of his employees! And his dedication to providing a good experience definitely permeated into his company. I've had several good experiences flying with Southwest. I'm truly sorry to hear of his passing. May God be with the family during this difficult time. (Psalm 29:11)

I flew for SWA back in the 80's and one particular month, Herb & Coleen were on my flight every morning. After serving the passengers, he insisted on me sitting in the lounge with the two of them. Absolutely, by far, the nicest man I've ever known. I've been gone for years, but have never forgotten the kindness of Mr. Kelleher. The world has lost an amazing leader!!

Southwest Airlines is almost too good to be true!! I've declared it is MY AIRLINE! I always check SWA first because it will intuit what I want in an airline/ trip! Knee room, overhead room, and eVen to the stewards etc entertaining us while we learn the safety information we all hear again and again (unless we fly some other airline probably because SWA didn't go where we had to go last time!) Other corporations, are you listening? Mr. Kelleher wanted us to feel this way about his (our) airline!!! And he still made money! We miss him!

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Herb Kelleher on January 3rd.

During the 80's and 90's I was a Southwest Airlines frequent flyer; one of their smaller frequent flyers. My first flight on S.W. Airlines was from Dallas to San Antonio in early 1972. I could fly from Dallas to San Antonio and stay in a La Quinta Inn for just a few dollars. I have good memories of the 70's.

Through the years I met Herb (that is what he told me to call him) several times. I sat beside this charismatic man twice on S.W. Airlines flights. He kept me and several of those around us entertained and laughing from take-off to landing.

I especially have fond memories of a San Antonio Chamber of Commerce mixer, I and my wife attended on May 23, 1988 that was held at the S.A. Airport in an airport hangar. The mixer was sponsored by S.W. Airlines and SeaWorld. A new 737 had just arrived from Boeing painted like the SeaWorld star attraction, Shamu. Herb recognized me and called me by my first name. We had last met on a S.W. Airlines flight a couple of weeks earlier. I was totally amazed he remembered my name. What a fantastic memory! I introduced him to my wife and without hesitation he gave her a very respectful warm hug and kiss. For about four or five minutes, I was shut out of the conversation between Herb and my personable wife.

I admired Herb's superb business skills and his extraordinary employee motivational abilities which I tried to emulate in our business. His Golden Rule philosophy is exactly what my parents taught me early in life. I especially embraced his belief that A Happy Employee makes for A Happy Customer and that translates into a successful business.

Heaven has just become a more friendlier and fun destination. May God bless Herb, his family and co-workers.

I am honored to have met such a great and decent human being during my lifetime.

Herbie,
I've been trying to think of the right words to tell you how thankful I am for you. My gratefulness to the life southwest has given me knows no bounds. I come from a whole family of southwest employees before I joined the fold a few years back. But what I didn't realize at the time is my blood kin wouldn't be the only family I gained at my work place. I don't know how I would have gotten through some of the major life events that occurred in the last several years without the family of co-hearts by my side. Herb, you and Colleen built a foundation of love, of trust and of community with SWA. The reason we all love our careers is so simple: you fostered the idea that everybody is a person and worthy of respect no matter where they fall in the work groups. You, and your unique spirit will be missed around the system.

Herbs family,
Thank you for sharing him with us all these years. He was your husband, father, brother, and friend. And we are just happy we got to have a peice of his love and dedication as well. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

This company has given me both roots and wings.
And to the man who orcistrated the madness: thank you, and cheers to a life well lived! You made one heck of an impact!
Kisses!

Although I never did actually work for SWA, I did have friends and family who did, and I always heard nice things about the company, and Herb Kelleher for many years. I admit, the incentive of attending classes and receiving my A/P certification years ago was solely due with the goal of being hired on with SWA. In time my career path took a turn, and think back, I coulda shoulda worked for Herb!

Herb was the very best CEO ever. His genuine love for the SWA Family is a huge part of his legacy that lives on in each of us. He taught us that everyone and every job is important, that titles don't define the person, and that hard work with a light heart can be fun and very rewarding. Herb was larger than life but had a humble heart. I will never, ever forget the love and acceptance he showed me personally. Thank you, Herb from the bottom of my heart!

As a passenger, I have always appreciated SWA policies on baggage and flight changes, but most of all I always enjoy the employees at every level who all seem to love their jobs and make the passengers feel special. As a retired executive, I feel that happy employees start at the top so it is no surprise to read all the glowing remarks from across the globe for a truly remarkable individual whose work ethic and cheerfulness helped form the best airline that ever existed! I fly frequently and stopped shopping around a long time ago because SWA is truly the best and usually beats the competition in price, but if not then the extra I pay is well worth knowing I will always enjoy my travel. I know that Herb's passing has affected too many to count and he will be dearly missed, but Wow! what a legacy he has left in this World!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Herb will be greatly missed by so many friends but the pain will be reduced by the many memories we share with him.

Like when it was decided not to partition the Catto Gage Ranch in the future between various owners but to use the King Ranch concept of Stock Ownership. We were working on the valuation of the ranch for IRS purposes when Herb told me about his concept for starting a new airline. I asked him if he really wanted to take on well-established airlines like Eastern and Braniff? How smart he was and how dumb I was.

Or

Herb was driving us down the Del Norte Mountains behind the ranch headquarters in one of the fleet of old Suburbans when one of the tires started to go flat. Herb said, I've heard that if you go fast enough downhill a tire will not go flat so let's try it. We careened downhill barely making the curves and rolled into the headquarters on the rim. Herb's comment Another theory disproved but it was worth a try!

The number of stories is endless but all will be fondly remembered.

Herb leaves a void that no one else can fill.

I had the honor of working for Herb and SW from 1982 to 1999. While I met and spent time with herb many times, one encounter sticks out. I was working as a Customer Service Supervisor in OKC one morning in 1985 when Herb motioned me aside and whispered in my ear. He asked if he could borrow $2.00 to tip the hotel van driver. It seems he had been in town for a function and stayed overnight. Colleen had returned to Dallas the night before. As many of you old time employees know, Colleen was Herb's right hand helper, and it seems he was lost without her around to take care of the details. I gave Herb the cash, he thanked me and gave me one of his signature hugs. The next day, in inter-office mail, I received an envelope with a hand written note from Herb and 2 crisp one dollar bills. What a wonderful man and great boss. Your Southwest family Luvs you and we will miss you greatly.

I will always remember and cherish a memorable Superviors luncheon we had in Phoenix. While Herb was delighting all of us a Wild Turkey drink was being passed towards the front of the group. Low and behold the drink ended in my hands as I was seated next to Herb. With the drink in my left hand Herb took it with his right and at the same time thanked me with a kiss on the cheek. Herb Kelleher was one of those incredible individuals whose life perfectly intercepted with history. He came along at a time when the airline industry was deregulating and made the most of that opportunity. While it is true that Herb is no longer with us, he is not gone. Everywhere I look I see the living vision of Herb and Colleen. Pretty much everything I have I owe to him, so even when I am at home I see his provision. We all owe him our homes, our retirements, our health care, our futures, and our children's futures. Without the foundation that Herb created, I wouldn't have some of the most treasured people in my life; that is, you, my friends and fellow Southwest coworkers. And yes, he was a great man, but far more. He was generous and considerate. He always placed us and this airline above himself. You may not know this, but when he was defending Southwest in court in those early years, Herb paid the company's court costs out of his own pocket. And those court costs where sizable. He remembered thousands of our names. Not just because he had an incredible mind, but because he wanted to. Every employee, no matter what their position, was not only important but valuable to him. He taught us all how to be great leaders, if we would only choose to follow his example. We have not only lost a great man, but the best employer a person could ever have. An airline builder and CEO to put Howard Hughes, Juan Trippe and Sir Branson to shame. He was a man more in love with aviation than most of the young pilots growing up today. And in many cases, we have lost a true friend. My heart is broken. I was informed of his passing in the jetway in El Paso. I ate alone in the hotel that night. Across the table was a glass of Wild Turkey, sitting in front of an empty chair. When I left it was still full. It was my last dinner and drink with Herb. May God Bless Herb Kelleher. The world he changed will never fully understand who it has lost. That is the mark a truly great man.

We had lots of fun at all the celebrations in the early days.if it werent for him and Southwest Airlines I would not have met my sweet husband. His sweet and kind heart always shown through. He gave the best hugs. Rest In Peace my friend. Gone but never forgotten.

Herb was just that type of guy that you wanted to be around, lit up the room, and was just a genuine human being. I had the pleasure of meeting this man at the Northwest Point, where he would show for brunch on Saturdays. Same time. Same table. Same drink. I'll never forget the words of wisdom this man had shared with me and encouraged me throughout the years I worked there. It is/was impossible to not want to be around or interact with Herb. One of the fondest memories, amongst the many, was St. Patrick's day 2006 and he strolls into the bar wearing a green hat, Shamrock pants, green suspenders, pins all over like he worked at TGIFridays and the ONLY person in costume! Some, or most, would feel embarrassed or shamed by this, but Herb's charisma, in a comical way, some how had the entire room ashamed of themselves for not dressing up. One of the most genuine, funniest, humorous, and fun people I have ever had the pleasure of interacting or being around and someone that impacts everyone he has ever interacted with. Thoughts and prayers with those whom he touched.

Herb was just the BEST! Every time I had the chance of being in his presence, I always considered it an honor. I always enjoyed his big genuine hug and kiss, just like in the pic. I attended a few luncheons where he was the main speaker, and I was always so impressed at how smart, witty, and captivating he was. He could answer any question. Not only was he all these things, he was so kind, so approachable, had a distinctive funny laugh, and made you feel important. Before my father passed in December 2011, he had been in a San Antonio hospital for about four months, I emailed Herb's office to see if Herb could send my dad a note of encouragement, since I knew my father respected him. Well, not only did Herb send my dad a beautiful letter, but a SWA model plane, and few more items. He was just an amazing person! I only had my few moments in his presence during my now 22 years of being with SWA, but I am so grateful for the wonderful moments. I truly loved him! My mother, sister, and myself were returning from Arizona, and the stewardess "SANG" to us!!. She entertained us, talked to us, she personalized herself to us..telling us little things about herself, and what a great company she worked for even how she became "part of the southwest famy".

Herb will forever be missed! It was an honor and joy to know I was working for an employer who put his employees first! His investment in his employees, fun-luving attitude, and his beliefs and authenticity to the golden rule, were only a small fraction of what made him such an amazing CEO! He earned his wings long ago has the freedom to fly. May he rest in eternal peace!

Both my husband and I work for the "LUV Airline". I'm a Flight Attendant and my husbands a Pilot. We've been with SWA 25 wonderful years and consider ourselves lucky to have worked for Herb. One of the many reasons we love SWA, Herb believed in his employees to be themselves and have fun while you worked. He treated everyone like they were part of his family. It's made the last 25 years for both of us a joyful experience. We have Herb to thank. He would lead by example and was a gem of a man. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us. Our condolences and love to friends and family.

My sad condolences. I love Southwest, and will only fly this airline when I go back East, I don't care how many stops that I have to make, but usually only 2! Most of the times, the trip has gone swimmingly, and I have no doubt that his employees loved him as well. I heard stories about this airline that he co foundered, many, many times, especially when I worked within the DoubleTree family and would have visitors to the Sacramento area. He did good, and I am sorry for this loss to so many and for his family. Good flying up in those heavenly bodies...

Herb, I was so very, very, fortunate to know you as a client, but also as a friend.

You weren't just legendary in the airline industry, but certainly as a friend of Texas and Dallas. And, you became the saving grace of Love Field and so many of its employees and businesses.

Thank you for teaching me how to play PacMan, and I won't say where. But, that was fun that would be hard to compete with. (Still have a little Wild Turkey at times. )

What an honor to get to know you, and see you in action so many times.

Rest in peace, Herb. Once again, you're flying with the best - this time for eternity.

I was honored to work for Herb as a Customer Service Agent for 27 exciting years. I have a great number of wonderful stories and the ones I'm most proud of are the stories from behind the scenes. During times of national and local disasters, family emergencies etc. Herb and Colleen via Southwest would authorize free travel, lodging etc. to external and internal customers in distress. Too many times to count. I am truly blessed and my family has enjoyed a wonderful life and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the greatest adventure! Godspeed Herb and God Bless Your family and SWA current and retired employees.❤Sheryl Mead. Proudly #2128.

I am heartsick today, hearing that my biggest inspiration in life has passed on to greener pastures. I'm sure that he will have a lead office in heaven within a week as soon as they all know what an amazing man he is. I worked for SWA from 1197 to 2003. I got to meet Herb about 5 or 6 times, between the Chili Cookoffs and other events and parties that I got the opportunity to go to. I always looked forward to traveling to the Message to the Fields because I would get to see and hear this wonderful speak and feel the inspiration that he was to sooooo many. It always amazed me that when he rode in on his motorcycle to the Chili Cookoff and he would have an entourage of body guards around him as everyone treated him like Elvis walking on to a stage. He remembered everybody's name even if you only met him once. I remember giving him an idea for a marketing campaign and although they didn't use it, he wrote me personally to let me know how much he appreciated the time that we put into it and said that we may have been able to use it for training. I remember standing in line for two hours waiting to see Herb and Colleen and to give them a hug and of course a Herb kiss at a reunion party that I got to attend. I would not leave without the opportunity again of saying hello and that I love them. Thank you Herb for all of the time that you put in to SWA and it making all of us employees feel as though we were your personal immediate family and giving your heart to each of us. RIP my friend. Luv always. Mindy Hardy

Herbie,
My four hours of employment with Southwest was spent with you in you office little did I know the tremendous impact that you would have on me years later. When I left your office that day my official nick name was Hers Helper. From that day on I couldn't even remember my real name. Herb you changed my life and you gave me an opportunity of a lifetime and for that I love you and for that I thank you. Being raised in a local children's home I could see the Southwest airplanes coming into Dallas and was always fun to watch them until they got so low that I couldn't see them anymore. Little did I know that one day I would be able to actually see the take off and land at love field. I want to tell you exactly what you told me when you would hold me and shake me and kiss me tell me I Love You, I Love You, I Love You !!!!!!
May you Rest In Peace my Special and dear friend. Herb's Helper

Both laughed heartily when I told them I had to pick up the £ 690 tab. Both Dr. Ryan and Herb were both visionary's in aviation. We will miss him. May he Rest In Peace.

Words seem so inadequate. But Herb was a man of words and a message of love to spread. A beautiful soul with a giant heart! A boss unmatched by any other. A lover of people, an astute business man and leader who knew how to motivate by creating an atmosphere of fun. He challenged us to be our best because he was the best. I am forever grateful to him for my livelihood. I left another carrier after 17 years to start all over at the bottom just to have the privilege of working for Herb. Almost 24 years later and I have never looked back. He made us all better people. I pledge to honor his legacy by continuing to color outside the lines. My deepest condolences to the Kelleher Family. ❤

So, I wanted to pick that too...he made us all feel so special...it was appropriate Herb started the LOVE airline because that's what he always showed us! He left a legacy to the world of lower fares for sooooo many more people to be able to afford to fly! Imagine being able to leave a legacy to millions of people, not only because of THAT, but because of the legacy he left to us at Southwest Airlines for all of us to have a financially secure future! I hope they are welcoming you with a Wild Turkey and an awesome deck party to last a lifetime! Prayers to your family! You are free to explore and soar the Heavens! Ding!~ Trang
Thank you Herb for giving
Thank you Herb for giving me the opportunity to take great care of my family through your generous benefits that your Company provides. It is always an honor to tell people that I work for Southwest Airlines and the response is always the same, how much they love it. You will be missed so much and my heart goes out to your family as I am certain that void can never be replaced. Well done Mr. Kelleher, well done!
Herb, you earned a special place in my heart and memories the very first time I met you back in 1984. Then and there, I knew I had stumbled upon the coolest place to work at in the world. At an airline lead by a brilliantly witty, fun-loving, chain-smoking, down-to-earth CEO, on a first name basis with every employee. For 33 years, you were THE LIFE of the grandest party I’ve ever had the pleasure to attend! And now, your indomitable spirit and heart of gold will forever remain the life blood of our Southwest family and its reason to exist. My own family and I are eternally grateful for the wonderful life and great memories that were made possible by you. We salute you, Herb, for a life well lived and for setting the highest standards of excellence for generations to come. May all the love you gave come back to provide you eternal peace in the warmth of God’s bosom. My sincere condolences to the Kelleher family and to all of Herb’s beloved friends.
