Dr. Ronald D. Anderson, Colonel US Army (Ret.) was born on the family farm outside Halstad, Minnesota on August 13, 1931 and died peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on December 28, 2018.

Dr. Anderson received his BA Degree and ROTC Commission from North Dakota State University in 1953. He then joined the Army and went to flight school to become an Army Aviator. His first flying assignment was in Germany. In 1957 he was released from active duty to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and he received his DVM degree (1961) and an MPH Degree (1964) from the University of Minnesota.

After receiving his DVM Degree he joined the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps where he directed and managed food safety, quality assurance, veterinary public health and animal medicine programs at all levels of command on tours in Italy, Thailand, South Korea and the United States. While assigned to the Academy of Health Sciences Veterinary Science Division he was also an Associate professor of Health Sciences at Baylor University and Adjunct professor in the Department of Health Measurement Sciences at Tulane University. He graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1970.

Dr. Anderson received numerous awards and recognitions achievements in Veterinary Medicine and Public Health, including the Surgeon General "A" Prefix Award for Professional Excellence in the field of Veterinary Public Health, Keith L. Ware Award for Special Television Achievement for the production of Wildlife Disease Surveillance of Military Reservations, and the Department of the Army Suggestion Award for In-Transit Fumigation of foodstuffs. His military honors include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2OLC), National Defense Medal (1OLC), Vietnam Service Medal, Army Occupation Metal (Germany), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and Army aviator Badge. He retired as a Colonel after 25 years of service in September 1980.

After retiring from the Army Dr. Anderson joined the Nevada Department of Agriculture as an epidemiologist where he was involved in all phases of state/federal animal health programs. His major focus at the time was assisting in the eradication of bovine brucellosis in Nevada. He worked with animal control personal and animal shelters in organizing a state dog bite prevention program that included coloring books, brochures posters, billboards, videos and Media coverage. He was elected to the AVMA Council on Public Health and Regulatory Veterinary Medicine and the AVMA Liaison to the U.S. Animal Health Association. He also served executive vice president of the Nevada VMA from 1989 to 1992. During this time Dr. Anderson worked with the California VMA Leadership to organize the Wild West Veterinary Conference held in Reno, Nevada.

Dr Anderson had the privilege of joining the AVMA Staff for one year as the assistant Director of Membership and Field Services where he assisted in implementing policy relating to public health, food hygiene, food safety, animal disease control and regulation, public service, and membership promotion. During this time, he worked with the U.S. Public Health Service to organize the Veterinary Medical Assistant Teams (VMATs) after Hurricane Andrew to help improve the profession's ability to address the large number of animal related deaths, injuries and abandoned animals.

Dr. Ronald D. Anderson is survived by his brother, Jerry Anderson; his daughter, Tari Nicolas and her husband, Emilio; son, LTC Jaime Anderson and wife, Anita; grandchildren, Emilio B. Nicolas and his wife Nancy, Daniel Nicolas and Kayla and Kyle Anderson and spouse, Eric Stone; and two great grandchildren, William and Dorothy Nicolas. He is also survived by cousins Norma Jean Nelson, Jack Horton, Dean Horton, Verona Schaffer, Roger Anderson, and Michael Anderson; second cousins Stacie Nelson, Rodger Schaffer, Gil Olson, David Olson, Sandy Leirness, Jeff Horton, Robert Horton, Bradley Horton, Christian Horton, and Charles Horton; brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Marilyn Hanson; nephew, Chris Hanson; and many good friends.

Funeral Services will be held 11:30am on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 16801 Huebner Road, San Antonio, TX Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery where Ron will join his beloved wife Jackie.
