Tribute & Message From The Family

Shirley A. Schwartz, 77, died on January 14, 2019 in hospice care in San Antonio, TX. Shirley was born on February 3, 1941 in Elberfeld, IN to Bert Poiles and Ruth Gentry Poiles, the youngest of six children: Jacqueline, Charles, Sharon, Pat, and Jerry. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Charles Poiles, and sisters, Jacqueline Hust and Sharon Morris. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John; children, Jeff Schwartz, Terre Haute, IN, Tiffany Schwartz-Rano (Paul), San Antonio, TX, Todd Schwartz (Mary), New Orleans, LA; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Shirley came from a musically-gifted family. She had a beautiful voice and could play many instruments. Shirley graduated Reitz High School in Evansville, IN in 1959. During her younger years, Shirley was a soloist with the Evansville All City Band, sang with big bands, and played viola in the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Later in life, Shirley could be found playing piano and organ during many church services or singing for special occasions and regularly in the church choir.
Shirley fought Parkinson's Disease for 25 years with great strength and determination. Her life serves as a testament of what a beautiful and loving spirit can do even when the body fails. She loved her family and traveled all over to visit them until Parkinson's finally kept her home.
Shirley will be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX on January 29, 2019. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VITAS Community Connection, 255 East Fifth Street, Suite 1200, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
We give thanks that today Shirley is singing songs of praise to her Lord, alongside family members who have gone ahead of her.

I worked with Shirley at the same company when she lived in Evansville, In.
she was a nice friendly young woman when I knew her. I can remember Terre Haute being mentioned and her husband, John. I now live in California. My sympathy to all of her family.

I was privileged to know Shirley, while I was pastor to her and John at Central United Methodist Church. She was a gracious woman with talent, energy and commitment. I and many others truly appreciated her. Parkinson's was already starting so slow her down during those years, and I am sure it got more difficult, but she had a strong faith and a supportive family. I celebrate her life and send my condolences to her family.

John and Family,
We were so sorry to hear of Shirley's death. We have such fond memories of a very special lady, especially of playing handbells at Central UM Church in Evansville. She touched so many lives in so many wonderful ways.

although it's been many years since we've seen you, your memory lingers on.. As a child I remember my family visiting yours, and hearing you sing and play the guitar. I am most thankful for the book you wrote regarding the "Poiles" family. I know you spent a lot time gathering information and putting it all together for some very informative reading. Loved that voice, loved that smile. See you in heaven someday.
