Tribute & Message From The Family

father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loving spouse

Victor Eugene "Gene" Lanfear, Jr., father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loving spouse, died Monday, January 21, 2019, at the age of 89 following a brief illness. Gene was born in Kingsville, Texas in 1929 and raised with his younger brother Ray in Corpus Christi, Texas. His childhood was filled with outdoor activities on the beautiful south Texas gulf coast, as well as competitive pickup basketball games with Bill Meredith, Frank Brooner and Tommy Gates, among others, all of whom were the same age and remained best friends for the rest of their lives.

Gene was a longtime member and deacon at Trinity Baptist Church. Later, Gene was a charter member of The Fellowship of San Antonio, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He obtained a business degree from the University of Texas in Austin. He then attended the University of Texas School of Law, where he graduated in 1952. He was an avid fan of all Longhorn sports teams.

After passing the bar exam at age 21, he was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War. Later, he practiced law in Corpus Christi, before moving to San Antonio in the early 1960s. Gene retired from the practice of law in 2014, after working over 60 years as an oil and gas lawyer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Eugene Lanfear, Sr., his mother, Mona Carroll Lanfear, and his brother, Ray Lanfear.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Sherron Gibbs Lanfear, and by his children, Theresa Helms and her husband, John Helms of Dallas; Richard Lanfear of Johnson City; Genie Lanfear of Houston; and Daniel Lanfear and his wife, Kate Lanfear, of San Antonio. His grandchildren, Ashlea Helms Mattoon, Ben Helms, Nicole Lanfear, Allison Lanfear, and Walter Lanfear also survive him. Surviving great-grandchildren are Teddy Hubbard, Beckett Hubbard, Halsey Mattoon, and Ellie Helms. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jo Ella Gibbs Barrett and several nieces and one nephew.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at The Fellowship San Antonio, 23755 Canyon Golf Rd., San Antonio, TX 78258.

Memorials may be made to The Fellowship of San Antonio or the charity of your choice.

My Heart is heavy with sadness, Gene was the last of my "Uncles" that my father had a life long relationship with. Uncle Gene was a kind and generous soul, he was our friend who we could call in time of need. I know he will be welcomed to Heaven by my Mom and Dad, his brother Ray, and many of his life long friends. Peace Gene, be Free of all worries and sorrow, know only happiness and youth again.
