Tribute & Message From The Family

On July 7, 2019, Matthew McCarter, doting husband and father of four, passed away at the age of 39.

Matthew was born November 14, 1979 in Salinas, California, but grew up in Rockford, Illinois.

Matthew was an accomplished guitarist, an awarded weight lifter, and a national champion martial artist. At the age of 19 he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a mission to St. Petersburg, Russia for two years. In 2003 he married Miriam Elaine, and he was the heart of her heart. They brought three beautiful sons and a fabulous daughter into this world. There was no shortage of love in their home.

In 2009 Matthew earned a PhD in business management and began an accomplished and promising career as a professor. He loved to work with others to create and innovate. He was a gifted instructor and an example of love and service to all.

Matthew was dedicated to his church and his family. He reached out to friends and strangers alike. His heart was good as gold. His family was the light of his life and he served them with all his heart. He'll be missed more than words can say.

Matthew was preceded in death by his father, Gregg Victor McCarter. He is survived by his loving wife, Miriam, and his four adoring children, Gabriel (14), Hyrum (12), John (10), and Liberty (6).

The funeral will be managed by Porter Loring Mortuary North in San Antonio, Texas. Family will receive friends on Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 11:30 to 12:30 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Miriam and Family, We just heard of Matt's passing and are so sorry for your loss. You all blessed us with your generosity when we lived in Illinois. Recently I was thinking of the car challenges we had and how your family let us take your little car to Vandalia to go rescue ours. We will forever remember the blessing that Matt gave Mike as he was finishing up his PhD and searching for a job. His words brought peace to our family. Matt was always eager to serve us and do anything he could. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I really enjoyed professor McCarter for my management class in my undergrad! I was a public health major and dreaded taking the business class required. He really made me enjoy the class and I actually looked forward to going to class. I'm sorry to hear of his passing, he was a great professor and person.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Matt well, but we asked for his help once to take some heavy things from our house over to a mutual friend's home. He brought your two oldest sons with him and I remember that when we thanked him, he thanked us instead for the opportunity to teach his boys how to serve. I've always remembered his kindness to us and those friends that he Home Taught at the time. After my brief interactions with Miriam and Matt and getting to teach Liberty in nursery for a short time I have absolutely no doubt of the love that you all have for each other in your family. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
