Tribute & Message From The Family

Alice "Licha" Vasquez Guzman, 78, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020. She was born on October 11, 1941 in San Antonio, Texas to Evaristo Vasquez, Sr. and Tomasa Flores Vasquez, where she lived the majority of her life.

Alice was a beautiful soul and a wonderful human being. She worked for various schools throughout the Edgewood Independent School District for more than 30 years and retired as the Cafeteria Manager from Henry B. Gonzales Elementary. After retiring, she continued working as a home health care provider. Alice's joy as a caregiver was providing loving care for her mother in her mother's final years. Alice spent almost every morning dancing in the kitchen as she cooked and laughed with her siblings gathered around their mother. After her mother's passing, she continued being a caregiver to various people, including her brother Carlos Vasquez.

Alice married Jesse Guzman on February 29, 1989, and they enjoyed 31 years of marriage. Alice's true passion in life was her family and friends. The love she had and the way she showered those close to her with her love is irreplaceable. She enjoyed spending nights with her husband and their closest friends at different places, watching various sports games and celebrating many occasions. Spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking was another passion she had, which she shared with numerous family members and friends. She never forgot a birthday and was known for the cakes that she brought with her to celebrate. She loved staying up late watching shows, movies, and documentaries, which she and her daughter would share their thoughts about. Many nights were spent sitting on the porch with her husband while having a drink and talking about anything and everything. She was a rare person in the way that she never shied away from sharing all of her emotions with those she loved. Whether it was laughter, tears, anger, or just her honest opinion, she was genuine and touched many lives around her.

Besides her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her son, Michael A. Hernandez, Sr.; a sister, Lydia (Robert) Downing; two brothers, Baltazar Ortega and Robert Vasquez; and a niece, Rose Marie Vasquez.

Alice is survived by her husband, Jesse Guzman; her daughter, Jeanette Hernandez (Efrain); her son, Jeffery Hernandez (Les); her siblings Juanita Buentello; Evaristo Vasquez, Jr. (Sandra); Guadalupe Vasquez (Sydney); Janie Castillo (Rudy); Carlos Vasquez; Mary Elizabeth Carmona (Luis); Daniel Vasquez, Sr. (Mary Helen); and Patricia Melton (Danny); her grandson, Michael A. Hernandez, Jr.; her granddaughter, Melanie S. Hernandez. She is also survived by her stepchildren, former San Antonio Mayor, Julian Castro (Erica); U.S. Texas Representative of the 20th district, Joaquin Castro (Anna); Javier Guzman (Carrie); Lillian Minor (James); Jesse Guzman, Jr. (Brenda); Kathy Martinez (John); John Guzman (Marie); as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Alice was the very definition of kindness and will be incredibly missed by all who knew her, especially her family and friends; her memory will live forever in those closest to her. Everyone who knew Alice is better because of her presence in their lives. May she rest in peace.

Services for Alice will be private.

A family celebration to honor Alice's life will be held at a later date.

Dearest Alice, You were a gentle soul, full of whimsy, kindness, the brightest of eyes with a smile to match. I'll never forget meeting you and your quiet and handsome partner, Jesse at Pop's so many years ago. You and I had a theme in common-PURSES! I shall miss spending those festive times with you and Jesse at Pop's and Melody's. So many lovely moments that I thought would never end. Maybe our life paths shall cross again and if you don't mind, sit a spell with my mommy, you'll like her. I'm so sad and I shall not ever forget you, my friend.❤
