Tribute & Message From The Family

Mark Anthony Pointon, age 57, entered eternal peace on July 31, 2020. He was born on January 23, 1963 to Gerda "Hetty" VanEmden and Anthony Pointon in Bedford, England.

While he resided between England and Holland during childhood, Mark moved to the United States at age 17 and graduated from John Marshall High School shortly thereafter. Upon graduation, Mark enlisted in the US Army and served 8 years at his station in Germany. It was in March of 1992, though, that he joined the San Antonio Police Department and found his true passion and calling. During his 28 years of tenure, he served as both a patrolman and detective, working in S.W.A.T., Narcotics, Special Victims Unit/Sex Crimes, and most recently, Property Crimes with the "Wolf Pack."

Mark was a member of the S.W.AT. Competition Team for almost 7 years and excelled in anything relating to physical fitness, strength, and endurance as evidenced by receiving the "Blue Tiger Award" which recognizes the "fittest of the fit" within the Department. He served as both the entry and anchorman for the team, and his skillset during this time led him to be known as a bit of a legend amongst his peers. His savvy ability to evaluate situations and, therefore, swiftly adjust tactics and outcomes helped his competition team to win first place awards against others from around the world.

His previous training, assessment skills, and ability to take charge of difficult situations led to Mark's promotion to Detective. As a new member of SAPD's Narcotics Division, he quickly became a great asset to this equally close-knit team. Mark served as the team's entry point and they depended on each other heavily during their daily encounters with dangerous situations.

With the Special Victims Unit/Sex Crimes and most recently, Property Crimes unit, Mark never relied on police procedure alone; rather, he followed instincts and body language to cut through a person's story until he got down to the facts, never missing a detail. He was a natural born leader, mediator, and loved to help others with gentle guidance and a nurturing spirit despite his tough exterior.

Most notably, though, Mark possessed a servant's heart. He was strong, yet compassionate and relished in being generous towards others. Anyone who met Mark knew there was something special about him and were immediately drawn to him; his beautiful smile, English accent, and selfless, humble demeanor. Mark retired on May 31, 2020, just two short months before his passing. Mark and Shannon had many plans for his retirement, and they were anxiously waiting to embark on the next chapter of their life together.

Mark was a devoted husband, father, step-father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.

Mark is survived by his wife, Shannon Pointon; their children, Morgan Pointon, Tanner Pointon, Kyle Garcia, and Alyssa Hall (DC); granddaughter, Corry Ann Hall; parents, Hetty and Hampton Bryan and Anthony Pointon; siblings, Stewart Pointon (Teri) and Casey Bryan (Vincent); nieces, Ashley Pointon and Cheri Mares (Chris); and nephew, Enzo Romano. Mark will also be forever remembered by his extended family, brothers and sisters in blue, and a lifetime of friends.

Associate Pastor Sean Metcalf will officiate, with closing by Chaplain Mefrige Tankersley.

Mark firmly believed in paying it forward. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Warrior's Heart Foundation and Treatment Center at so the next first responder will be blessed with the opportunity to receive the care and treatment he or she both deserves and needs.
