Tribute & Message From The Family

Anna Maria Reck, age 89, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born February 7, 1931 in Udine, Italy to Bianca Mazzotti and Antonio Bizzaro.

Anna Maria Bizzaro was born in the Friuli-Venezia Guilia region of Italy, near the foot of the Alps. She was the youngest of six children and was raised by her older sisters because her mother died when she was an infant. She carried memories of the atrocities she witnessed during WWII, but never let those memories spoil her sweet, happy personality.

She met USAF fighter pilot Bernard Charles Reck while working at the base exchange at Aviano Air Force Base in Italy. Anna and Bernie married in 1960 and had four children while moving around the United States and the world for 28 years before settling in San Antonio in 1979. After retirement, they built their dream home on the shores of Canyon Lake.

Anna always taught her children that family is the most important thing in this life — that our family can depend on each other no matter what. She taught us the importance of being affectionate and showing each other love and support. She would frequently tell her family, "Ti voglio tanto bene." In Anna's house, it was okay to get mad at each other and to express those feelings. Her children knew she was mad when she would give chase muttering Italian swear words. Most importantly, it was understood that anger was never permanent as love always was.

In her kitchen, food expressed love, especially Italian food made from scratch like gnocchi, bolognese lasagna (using béchamel NOT ricotta), cannelloni, and crostata di frutta to name a few. Anna loved being social and the life of the party. She had a wicked sense of humor at times. She also loved to dance - especially with her husband. She enjoyed opera music and the voice of the Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli. Anna was creative and was a professional seamstress who designed and made several wedding dresses. She had a green thumb and hydrangeas were her favorite flower. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and while stationed at Yokota AFB in Japan, also learned to paint in a traditional Japanese style using ink and watercolors.

She demonstrated that a mother's love and care and support knows no bounds. Anna was dearly loved not only by her family, but by so many people who knew her.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Neves, Elda, Bruna, and brothers Gian Carlo and Sergio. Anna is survived by her husband of sixty years, Col. Bernard C. Reck, USAF (Ret.); children, Susan Reck, Bernard C. Reck II and wife Christina, Patricia Reck and husband Bryan Burns; and Christina Reck-Guerra and husband Michael Guerra; grandchildren Charlton Cohen, and Jonathan and Maria Reck; as well as numerous other extended family members and a lifetime of friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Lichtenstein, MD, the home health caregivers from Always Best Care, the caregivers at Arden Courts, and the medical staff and doctors at North Central Baptist Hospital. We are eternally grateful for their compassion and care of our precious wife, mother and grandmother.

2:00 P.M.
