Condolence & Memory Journal

I have just learned of Claude's passing and want to say how much I respected his work while we labored together at the SA Express-News. I always breathed a sigh of relief when I handed my column to him on my way home from work, knowing it was in competent hands. ... He was also one of the finest human beings I have known. On behalf of the Brigidine Sisters, and especially on behalf of Sr. Veronica and Sr. Anne (formerly Sr. Gonzaga who is now in Ireland), I send our very sincere sympathy to all the Simpson family on the death of Claude. May he be at peace in God's loving embrace. Know that we will remember him very especially, and all of you, on Wednesday when we gather for Mass here in our chapel at Loma Linda. Some of my best memories of my time at The University are of playing poker with Claude and a group of '71 and '72 graduates of Antonian and other San Antonio high schools. The card playing and the conversation sometimes lasted until morning the next day. Upon graduation, I did not return to San Antonio and did not maintain relationships built in those college years. But I never forgot those I spent so much time with having fun and just talking about stuff. I remember his smile, his humor, and his really long hair. Rest in peace, buddy.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Claude's passing. We shared a birthday - born on the same day at the same hospital in San Antonio. As an Ursuline girl, we met through the drama club and were fast friends. He and I went to Mexico on a first folk art buying trip for us both. Claude was a brilliant person and a joy to be around. He will be missed.

Claude, Thank you for the conversations we had in the 70s and for the ideas you shared about living. I know we were scheduled for a conversation about reincarnation sometime this year and I'm sorry that was interrupted by the pandemic. I will continue to cherish what we shared in this life and expect to compare notes in the next. David
