Tribute & Message From The Family

Russell Clifford Brown passed away from natural causes on August 22, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. A devoted son to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford O. Brown, Russell grew up in Mystic, Connecticut where he excelled at sports and academics from a young age. He participated in the Boy Scouts of America, rising to the highest rank of Eagle Scout and he was one of just two students selected to represent Connecticut in the prestigious national Boys State program. He attended Stonington High School and received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Connecticut, where he played basketball. He transferred to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and graduated with honors in 1959 alongside his identical twin brother Ronald Santin Brown. After serving in the US Navy, he began a distinguished engineering career at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut where he became the only civilian selected by Navy Admiral Hyman Rickover to serve as chief nuclear test engineer for the Navy's submarine program. He went on to earn his M.B.A. from Northeastern University in Boston while working at General Dynamics before transferring to San Diego. He would later complete the Advanced Management Program at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, while embarking on a successful career as a management consulting executive. His career eventually took him to Washington, DC where he joined the U.S. Agency for International Development and served as chief-of-party on energy-related projects in developing countries in Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. A loving father and devoted husband, he is survived by his daughter MaryEllen, sons Robert, Andrew and Matthew, and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Maureen McCabe Brown.
