Obituary for Ryoko Yamada Seagraves

October 2, 1926 - January 24, 2019
Lewisville, Texas | Age 92

RYOKO YAMADA SEAGRAVES passed away January 24, 2019 at the age of 92 in Lewisville, Texas. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all whose lives she touched.

Born in Urawa, Japan, on October 2, 1926, Ryoko was the fourth of nine children born to Nobuyoshi Yamada and Haru Togura,. After WWII, Ryoko met and married William Jay Seagraves in Japan and this union was blessed with the birth of four children.

Ryoko lived a full life raised in a close and loving family and loved beyond measure by her husband, children and friends. She was blessed with welcoming arms from her husband's family in southern Illinois after she set foot on American soil for the very first time in the early 50's. Ryoko was a strong, determined and independent woman. There was never a job too large or too small that she would not tackle.

Ryoko was a stunningly beautiful woman and always dressed with impeccable style. She learned to become a military spouse and traveled to many places and stood proud when in 1963, she became an American citizen. She had a strong desire to learn about anything she did not know how to make or do. Ryoko was a Christian and was always eager to attend church.

Ryoko loved to cook, was highly skilled with knitting needles and crochet hooks , a wonderful seamstress and loved to fish. She loved plants and gardening and everything flourished with her green thumb. She knew Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, and created many beautiful arrangements. She had a long-standing and committed love of animals. Ryoko was never a stranger to any dog or cat for they instinctively felt her kindness. When her children grew older, she went into the business world owning a restaurant and then a flower shop for over 25 years.

After her retirement, Ryoko was active with the Japanese-American Cultural Society in San Antonio and played tennis regularly with friends and bowled in leagues. She participated in aerobics and walked for miles every day until her late 80's when her health made it impossible. Ryoko was accepting of everyone she met and all who loved her dearly will never forget her kindness, thoughtfulness, charm and grace.

Most of all she loved her family. She was the rock...their strength. Her most generous gift was her giving of all her time and self to her family with loving support and encouragement. Ryoko was an amazing woman and will be dearly missed, but forever she will be held in the hearts of all who knew and loved her for many years to come.

Ryoko is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William Seagraves.

The family will forever be grateful to Knoll Ridge Care Home in Lewisville, especially her caregivers, Liz and Eileen, for their love, care and compassion. And also, to the staff at Lifeway Hospice for their loving care and kindness.

She is survived by her four children, Judith Catherine Williams of Austin, Texas, Lorna Kay Bason (Guy) of Plains, Montana, Wilmon Ray Seagraves (Tina) of San Antonio, Texas and Veranon ElRay Seagraves of Little Elm, Texas; four grandchildren, Dagan Williams, Adam Bason, William Seagraves and Michael Seagraves; two great-granddaughters, Avery Williams and Ashtyn Williams; and one brother, Nobuyuki Yamada (Katsuko) of Koriyama, Japan and many other family members in Japan.

Graveside services will be held for the family on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband, William Jay Seagraves.
