Obituary

Aida Esther Swinning, our beautiful mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

Aida was born in Santiago, Veraguas, Panama, on July 14, 1940. She graduated from Escuela Normal de Santiago and studied Business Administration at the University of Panama in Panama City. Her father, a noted musician and composer, instilled within her the love of music. She carried that with her all her life and her home was always filled with music and dance.

Aida met her husband, James T Swinning III, through mutual friends while he was stationed at Howard AFB in Panama. They were soon married on August 23, 1969. Their only daughter, Aura, was born in 1971. An Air Force wife, Aida supported her husband during six tours in 19 years which included Virginia, Panama, Wyoming, England, the Philippines and finally settled in Texas. She volunteered at the Institute of Texan Cultures and at the Texas Folklife Festival for several years. Aida loved to dance, shop, go to the movies, visit museums and travel. She was quick with a big, bright smile and made a friend wherever she went.

Aida was a strong woman. She was independent, incredibly selfless and never gave up. She was fearless. She devoted her life to caring for her husband and daughter and made sure to provide the best she could for them. When her husband was ill and recovering from brain cancer, she took care of him while she herself fought and beat breast cancer. She later became ill with liver cancer. She fought her illness until her body could no more. Always looking out for others before herself, she made sure her family was emotionally, physically and mentally ready for her passing. She was a mom until the very end.

Aida is preceded in death by her parents José Luis Rodriguez Vélez and Aura Tristán de Rodriguez of Santiago, Panama. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James T. Swinning III of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Aura (Robert) Andrade of Pflugerville, TX; sister, Aura (Rex) Lawrence of San Antonio, TX; brothers, José Luis (Diana) Rodriguez and Nestor (Lourdes) Rodriguez of Panama; nieces, Eva (Scott) Brunell of Houston, TX, and Ana Maria Rodriguez of Panama; and nephews, José Luis (Christina) Rodriguez of Toronto, Canada, and Nestor Santander (Estela) Rodriguez of Panama. She also leaves behind her aunt, Luisa Rodriguez of Panama and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to extend its gratitude for the care mom received to the doctors, nurses, physical therapists, counselors, specialists, nursing assistants and anyone who came in contact with mom and the family during her illness. A special heartfelt thank you goes to the staff and residents at Heartland Healthcare and Rehabilitation and to her hospice team at Vitas Healthcare. The family is humbled by the care, dedication and love mom received during the final year of her life.
