Obituary

Albert I. Serna III (84) passed away with his son holding his hand on the evening of January 23, 2020. Born in San Antonio on May 4, 1935 to Anna Katherine Webb and Albert I. Serna, Jr., he went to St. Henry's grade school and graduated from Central Catholic ('53) and St. Mary's University (BA '57 Sociology, MA '77 Guidance & Counseling). Albert can be described as a faithful servant in work and avocation. He was a Vietnam veteran, proudly serving in the US Army and Army Reserves (LTC) and for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), retiring from both.

The Catholic Church was important throughout his life, and he served in various ministries beginning as an altar boy and including Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and CYO little league coach. Active for many years in the Boy Scouts, he earned his Eagle, served as a scout master, and was instrumental in starting some troops.

He was an avid golfer and square and round dancer, belonging to several clubs over the years. He loved music and could play the accordion, guitar, and piano. Friends and acquaintances will recall his passion for helping others and dancing. As he moved his shoulders up and down to the music, he would say, "Anyone can dance. It's easy—just hear the beat."

Survivors include his children Albert I. Serna IV and partner Ulrika Delaunay, Rose Eakin, Katherine Velasquez and husband John, Sharolyn LePage and husband Jim; grandchildren Erin Peterson and husband Ben, Carrie Yelverton and husband Scott, Shannon Eakin, Justin and George Velasquez, Zachary, Kevin, and Kara LePage; 3 great grandchildren; brother Robert Serna and wife Sheila Brown.
