Obituary for Alda Charles Epstein

October 26, 1920 - April 6, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 97

Alda Charles Epstein passed away early Friday morning, April 6, 2018. A wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Alda lived 97 extraordinary years. Born in San Antonio in 1920 to her Jewish immigrant parents, Alda grew up to be a generous, courageous, beautiful, kind and loving woman of valor.

She was a child of San Antonio, her family moving from neighborhood to neighborhood in the challenging years of the Depression. For a few years she lived in Mirando City where her family operated a grocery store and, as she put it, a "picture show theater." She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1938 and married Martin Epstein II, z'l, the next year. She and Martin both worked at Kelly Field during World War II, proud to serve their country.

While raising her family, Alda volunteered her time to numerous causes but two stand out. She devoted great energy to promoting and raising funds for Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel's premier medical center serving all of Israel's diverse populations. She served as local president for two years and became a life member. She remained active for many years, and Hadassah recognized her service by awarding her its prestigious IMA award. Years later, some of her great-grandchildren were born in the very hospital she so lovingly supported.

Her other love was more recreational – Shadywood Swim Club, which she served as president for ten years. Shadywood served as a summer community center for many, bringing families together for swimming, bingo, summer camp and family barbeques. It was where her own family gathered – her children, grandchildren, her three siblings and their children. Shadywood helped form wonderful family memories.

She and Martin greatly enjoyed their many visits to Las Vegas, where she would love to play the slots and take in the shows of the great stars of the day.

Alda's many friends appreciated her elegant style, her sharp wit, her devotion to family and friends and her sheer spunk. She made people smile, and laugh, and love.

Alda is survived by her children, Sandra Leigh, Norman (and Helen) Epstein, Garry (and Judy) Epstein; her grandchildren, Jeff Mendelsohn, Robyn Yakin, Shari Judah, Adam Epstein, Joe Epstein, and Katie Ekis; and her great-grandchildren, Caroline Mendelsohn, Charles Mendelsohn, Gabrielle Mendelsohn, Ilan Yakin, Yuval Yakin, Eitan Yakin, and Nosson Pitterman.
