Andrew Weir Rankin, age 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 11, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on February 26, 1938 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Howard and Viola (Weir) Rankin. Andy attended Macalaster College in St Paul, Minnesota prior to joining the United States Army in 1961. After achieving the rank of Specialist 5, Andy accepted a scholarship to attend the nursing program at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army and spent the next 20 years serving in the Army Nurse Corps. In 1966 while attending the US Army Officer Nurse Corps Training program, he met WO1 Mary Ann Clark who became his wife in 1968; they would have celebrated 52 years of marriage on June 29th. Shortly before retiring from the US Army in 1983, Andy earned a Master of Science in Hospital Administration from Webster University. Andy made giving back a very important part of his life; he contributed greatly to the establishment of a nursing lecture program for the University of the Incarnate Word, as well as making frequent and generous donations to the Episcopal Church, Wounded Warrior Project, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society. He was very active with St Thomas Episcopal Church, participating in Cursillo, Lay Eucharistic ministry, and a youth missionary trip to Mexico.

The Rankin/Tanner family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the amazing staff at Independence Hill Assisted Living for the never ending love and care that they have provided, The Weston Group therapy team, for always going above and beyond what was needed, and to Kindred Hospice for providing an infinite amount of love and care to our family during a very difficult time.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father, Howard J Rankin; mother, Viola (Weir) Rankin. Andy is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Rankin; daughter, Heather Tanner (Terry); grandchildren, Tera Owens (Luther), Gracie, and Avery; great grandchildren, Addison, and Orion.

12:00 P.M.

Rev. Mike Michie will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will be in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association.
