During her father's service in the Merchant Marine's during World War II and subsequent employment, the family lived in several places, settling in Jackson, Mississippi. It was here that she met her husband, Calie Crowder who she married on September 20, 1953.

She was a member of the first class of women undergraduates to attend Texas A&M University. She graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, with a degree in English with honors. She worked for an insurance company, St. Mary's University and the Bexar County Hospital system as a writer. She later ran her own publishing business. She enjoyed traveling, reading, painting, and playing the violin.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Calie Crowder; her daughter, Deborah Carol Crowder Rutherford; and her son, Kenneth Charles Crowder; as well as her grandchildren, Jessica Leigh Crowder, Joseph William Shulter II, Elizabeth Anne Crowder Rozier, Cassandra Mariah Shulter, and Evan David Crowder. She was preceded in death by her father, James Patton Smith; her mother, Lena Augusta Boone Smith; and her great-granddaughter, Charlotte
Alma Rozier.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, memorial services will be held at a later time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation (https://www.parkinson.org).
