Obituary

Carolyn Liberda, age 84, went to be with her Lord, on September 20, 2018. She was born in Winters, Texas to Albert L. Afflerbach and Olga Zappe Afflerbach. Carolyn attended Winters public school system through eighth grade, then St. Joseph Academy in Abilene for three years, and then returned to Winters to complete her senior year. She was active in school as a cheerleader, member of the Sodality, Treasurer and Social Committee Leader of her Junior Class, member of the Science, Glee, Theatre, Tennis, and Choral clubs, as well as a reporter for the newspaper and yearbook.
She attended Incarnate Word College in San Antonio where she majored in Home Economics and married her college sweetheart, LeRoy Liberda, on November 11, 1955. During the first five years of their marriage they lived in four towns and had 2 children. They finally put down roots for 6 years in Austin, Texas and became very involved in their parish, St. Ignatius Catholic Church. In 1967, LeRoy started his own business and the family moved to San Antonio. Carolyn set up 3 more homes, until they finally built their dream home in 1969. In the 70's, Carolyn went to teach for Kirby Junior High in the Vocational Education Department and also as a substitute teacher for Judson ISD.
She was a passionate painter, artist, poet, and dancer. She especially enjoyed dancing with her husband, LeRoy, and their Family Guild group. Carolyn and LeRoy spent many evenings gathered around the kitchen table playing cards with friends. Carolyn was very active in her parish at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. She held office with St. Vincent de Paul, was a member of the Catholic Daughters/Daughters of our Lady of Fatima #2596, and volunteered at the annual church bazaar among other social church activities. She attended daily mass as often as she could, as well as, devoting her weekly Hour of Adoration. Carolyn was instrumental in instilling the Catholic faith and her love of God into her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She taught them to put God first, and everything else would fall into place. Carolyn loved welcoming the grandchildren to visit her home in San Antonio, and they all loved racing to be the first to ring the doorbell. From hot dogs stashed in the fireplace, to the searching through the giant toy box, to playing tag in the big backyard, her home was a special place where memories were made.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Liberda; her parents, Albert and Olga Afflerbach; step-mother, Ila Harrell Mershon; and her brothers, Lt. Robert Afflerbach and Howard Afflerbach.
She is survived by her son, Christopher Liberda and wife, Janis, of St. Hedwig, Texas; daughter, Cherie and husband, Bob Ashwander, of Katy, Texas; sister, Dorothy Psencik Ferrell of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughters, Lindsay and husband, Cliff Kulhanek, Brittany and husband, Chris Hauck, and Mallory Ashwander; grandsons, Joshua and wife, Brittany Liberda, and Jon Liberda; her great-grandchildren, Austin Liberda, Briggston, Bryker and Broen Hauck, Clifton and wife, Liz, Justin, Kailey, and Emmalyn Kulhanek; great-great-grandson, Clifton Gene Kulhanek; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
