Obituary for Charlene B. Myers

October 1, 1928 - April 28, 2020
San Antonio, Texas | Age 91

Charlene was born in Roosevelt, Utah, to Eva Mae Wimmer and Francis Xavier Bellon on October 1, 1928. She was the proud descendent of Mormon pioneers whose membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be traced back to the 1830s. All her life, she had a sense of adventure. She graduated from high school at 15 and, at 17, moved with her sister Louise to San Francisco with $50 and a bus ticket. They got jobs and stayed for 2 years. After moving back to Utah and marrying Ralph Harrison in 1951, she and Ralph moved with his geophysical crew all over Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and West Texas as the crew explored for oil. In 1954, she and Ralph settled in San Antonio. Ralph passed away in 1969.

Charlene worked for Allstate Insurance Company in the claims office for more than 29 years, retiring in 1990. Many of the people she hired either retired after long careers or still work there.

In 1976, she married Jack Myers. She and Jack loved travel and the outdoors, and they completed 253 10K Volksmarches, including at least one in each of the 50 states, timing their trips to take advantage of the fall leaves and spring flowers. They also enjoyed many trips with her sister Louise and husband Frank Mehner, and for many years they helped gather all her siblings for an annual reunion in Park City, Utah. Charlene and Jack were stalwarts in their church congregation and served 12 years in the Houston and San Antonio LDS Temples.

Charlene's home was the gathering spot for generations of friends and church members, and she was known as a hospitable, fun, and patient mother. Granddaughter Laura said it best: "My Grandma was pretty much the greatest grandma – always on your side, stories for any occasion, all the Estée Lauder and Clinique samples you could need. You could never be hungry around her because she was always offering you food. She was a fierce Spurs fan and spoke to 'Pop' with the clear expectation he was listening to her. She was kind and positive and forever your biggest fan. She had an outstanding life and I know she's having the best time right now reuniting with her parents and brothers and sisters. I love you, Grandma."

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph Harrison; sisters, Shanna Moore, Carol Lagerstedt and Louise Mehner; and brother, Doral Bellon. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, John William Myers and his four children, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; daughters, Pamela King and husband Michael, and Deborah Harrison and husband Bruce Kemph. Her five granddaughters and six great grandchildren were the light of her life: Ashley King, Emily King Headley and husband Ward, Laura King Pattie and husband Carl, Andrea King Lacey and husband Jesse, and Izzy King Gerber and husband Zach; and great grandchildren, Ward and Sammy Headley, William Pattie, Miles King, Bowie Lacey, and Margot Gerber. She also looked forward to the birth of Laura and Carl's daughter soon.
