Obituary

Charles "Chuck" C. Baldwin, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, February 4. 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. Chuck was born May 20, 1930 in Buffalo, New York to Miriam Coleman and Stanley Baldwin. He swam competitively in high school and was captain of the Kensington High School swim team in 1948. He attained every city and high school record with the exception of backstroke. He was a member of the relay team that set the national high school record for the 160 yard freestyle.
He graduated from Michigan State University where he was the captain of the swimming team in his senior year and a three-time NCAA All American. He went on to join the United States Air Force, where he served for a time as the Swimming and Diving Coach at the US Air Force Academy. He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict and flew 135 combat missions in F-4 Phantom jets receiving several commendations including the Bronze Star and 4 Air Metals. Following his retirement from military service in 1976 he once again became involved with competitive swimming, winning 45 national gold metals, setting 32 national records and 8 world records. His successful swimming career earned him a place in the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame and both the Texas and National Senior Games Hall of Fame.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sarah Nardoci; and infant son, Lanny Baldwin. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dianne Baldwin; mother of his five children Gloria Baldwin; Chuck Baldwin and wife Gayle of Austin, Texas, Yvonne Hilton of Corvallis, Oregon, Anthony Baldwin and wife Eva of Knoxville, Tennessee and Carrie Baldwin of Maui, Hawaii; grandchildren, Crysta Delin and husband Fred, Ginnette Baldwin, Natalie Baldwin, Ryan Hilton, Coleman Hilton and wife Kelly, and Mark Hilton; as well as great-granddaughter, Henley Hilton. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, San Antonio, Texas.
