Obituary

Charles E. "Chuck" Swalla passed away peacefully at home on July 3, 2019 after a brief but hard-fought battle against advanced renal cancer. Chuck was born on July 18, 1946, the only son and youngest of three children. As a child growing up in Iowa, Chuck developed a love of the outdoors, especially fishing, which he enjoyed throughout his life. Following his 1964 graduation from Central Webster High School, were he met his beloved to-be wife, Sue Lockhart, Chuck enlisted in the United States Navy, training in the Great Lakes as well as in California. He served on the USS Turner Joy during the Vietnam War and was welcomed home by his family in 1967. Chuck and Sue married in Lehigh, Iowa on July 5, 1968 and moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota where he attended and graduated from Lea College. His first job as an auditor with Oscar Mayer took them to Madison, Wisconsin, where their only child, a daughter, Jana, was born in 1972. The next several years saw job changes and moves to Oklahoma, Ohio and eventually to Corpus Christi, where Chuck began what would become a 25-year career with H-E-B, relocating to San Antonio in 1985 and retiring in 2002. Upon his retirement, Chuck enjoyed spending time with his family and friends; serving various positions with the Redland Heights Homeowners' Association; traveling; woodworking; and most especially, fishing every chance he could.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Winona Swalla; and his sisters, Charlene Derrig and Sharon Crouse, all of Iowa. He was loved deeply and will be missed by his cherished wife of nearly 51 years, Sue; his daughter, Jana and son-in-law, J.K. Baxter; his two beloved grandchildren, Kendall and Will Baxter and several nieces and nephews.
