Dr. Charles Edward Deal, age 83, died unexpectantly Monday morning, March 4, 2019 at Northeast Baptist Hospital, San Antonio, Texas surrounded by family and friends. He had a long up-hill battle from being exposed to agent orange during the Vietnam War. He battled multiple melanoma, prostate cancer and developed hydrocephalus resulting in shunt placement in May 2010. By this time, he had to quit driving and was unable to make important decisions in his life.
Charles was born March 25, 1935 to Horace Greely and Nannie Bernice (Hodges) Deal in Statesboro, Georgia. In 1953 he graduated from Statesboro High School, he stayed to work on the family farm for a few years prior to joining the Army in 1957. In the military he served our country for over 20 years in numerous military battalions some of which included Military Police, Transportation and Air Defense. He was involved in and helped develop Drug/Alcohol prevention programs, he taught courses at the Army Education Center for the University of Maryland in Sociology and Psychology; taught at Baylor University; served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science, St. Bonaventure University; Alcohol and Drug Control Officer at the US Army Alcohol and Drug Rehab. Center. He was also a Vietnam War Veteran. Over his Military career he received several medals: Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Vietnamese Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class, and the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Service Star Medal.
In 1958 he married Velda Mae Williams while stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. She faithfully supported him throughout his educational achievements, military and civil service career. They had three children from this union, Linda, Stephan and Christopher. All enjoyed the travel and adventures together from his career.
In 1977 he retired from the Military with the rank of Major and graduated from Baylor University with his Doctoral Degree majoring in Psychology. In 1978 he joined the Civil Service and accepted employment with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Education. Some of his assignments included the Navajo Indian Reservation as a Guidance Counselor and Psychologist/Coordinator Special Education and Psychological Services to mentally challenged students in agency boarding schools; Clinical Director at the Army Drug/Alcohol Rehab. Program, Ft. Stewart, Georgia and Ft. Sam in the Drug Alcohol/ Rehab Program. He retired from the Civil Service in 2010.
After 40 years of marriage, Charles and Velda divorced in 1998. He then married Karen Ackard who passed away from cancer in 2011.
He was a devout southern Baptist and member of Trinity Baptist Church and sang yearly in the Living Christmas Tree for many years; member of Community Bible Church. During his last years he started attending the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Charles was a loving father, uncle, brother and friend to many. He was kind but taken advantage of by many in the last years of his life. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
Charles was preceeded in death by his parents, Horace and Bernice Deal, Statesboro, Georgia; brother, Jasper W. Deal; sister Betty and husband Bobby Stringer; sister Helen and husband Carl Scott; sister Carene and husband Troy Mallard; son, Stephan Edward Deal (Patricia) ; and second wife, Karen.
He is survived by his brothers, Hugh (Kay) Deal and Edgar (Diane) Deal of Statesboro, GA; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his first wife, Velda W. Deal, San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Linda D. Gonzales (Robert), San Antonio, Texas and son, Christopher C. Deal (Stephanie), Dallas, Texas. Step Daughters, Tracey B. Pressly (Thomas) and Amy Scheiber (Bruce); Grandchildren, Hunter, Brayden and Chandler Deal; Jason Owens (Ana) , Kevin Owens (Nora), Robert J. Gonzales, Catherine Herring (Mason), Thomas Pressly, Katie Scheiber; Great Grandchildren, Mariella, Amy, Michael, Christopher and Lincoln Owens, Valkyrie Gonzales. Numerous other family members and friends who will all miss him.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Northeast Baptist Hospital and caregiver Esmelisinda Summers for all their assistance and support during this time.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Porter Loring Mortuary North at 12 noon on April 1, 2019 and a private memorial service with military honors will be held immediately after at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
