Obituary

Charles Sugerman died on March 15, 2018 at the age of 85. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and family. Chuck was born in Chicago on July 13, 1932. His family moved to San Antonio in the 1940s.

Chuck graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1950. He received his business and law degrees from the University of Texas in 1955. He was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1955, but after 11 years left the practice of law to join his parents in building their family business.

That business was purchased by Zale Corporation, and Chuck served as a Senior Vice President of Zale Corporation in the early 1970s. He returned to San Antonio in 1972. Chuck and his business partner, Stanley Rosenberg, bought the family business from Zale Corp and built it into a business that employed hundreds. Whether he was distributing Sony TVs through South Texas and Mexico, manufacturing military insignias, or importing precision optical instruments from Europe, Chuck thrived as a CEO of a small, dynamic business.

Chuck was deeply involved in San Antonio. He served as president of the San Antonio chapter of the USO. He served as president of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio. He served on the national young leadership cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal. He raised money and gave generously of himself.

Chuck married Sondra Ann Weiss on August 22, 1954. They built a life together that started as college kids in Austin and sank deep roots in San Antonio. Together, they raised four children, Jeffrey (Sarah Schultz), Debra, David (Janet Byrd), and Robert (Susan). Their brood grew to include a passel of grandsons, Noah (Emma), Jacob, Sam, Ian, Adam, and Seth, and one granddaughter, Ella. He was also blessed with one great-grandson, Levi. Sondra Sugerman passed away in 2004.

Chuck was fortunate to find love and laughter again, after Sondra died. He married Leslie Beasley and her daughters, Katie Beasley Roy (Rob) and Emily Beasley McGinn (Jon), along with grandkids Matthew and Tempe, became part of Chuck's loving and adoring family. Leslie Sugerman passed away in 2013.

In his younger days, Chuck was a runner. He and his running posse at the Downtown YMCA pounded epic runs through Brackenridge Park and the Riverwalk.

Chuck was blessed with a quick wit and a wicked sense of humor. His humor was observational, with impeccable comedic timing. In later life, he developed Parkinson's disease. Undaunted, his style of humor morphed into a deadpan delivery that made the most of Parkinson symptoms.

More by deed than by word, Chuck set the bar high for his children and grandchildren. He took quiet pride in their varied accomplishments.

In addition to his four children and grandchildren, Chuck is survived by his brother-in-law, Sid Weiss; his nieces Sheri Weiss Fleishman (Robert), Susie Weiss Davidson (Phillip), Lori Stahl, and Cathy Stahl Golden (Gary); his nephew Sidney "Trey" Weiss (Stephanie); former daughter-in-law, Deborah Tolmach Sugerman; and many loving cousins and friends.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Sugerman and Sylvia Fisher Sugerman and his sister, Judy Sugerman Davis.

The family also wishes to thank his amazing team of care providers who watched over him in his last years, John Martinez, Salvador Garcia, Anthony Espinoza, and Alan Barerra.
