Obituary

Charles Howard Redkey Jr., age 90, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on February 2, 1929 in Giddings, Texas to Charles Howard Redkey and Clara Lee Heck. Charles Howard Redkey. Sonny Boy. Charlie. Dad. Uncle Howard. Grandad. A man of many names and a big heart. Many will remember him from his familiar greeting, "Hello Sunshine!"

Charlie was a gregarious and God-fearing family man who loved his beautiful wife, Gloria, of 67 years more than anything in the world. Originally from San Antonio, he played baseball at Trinity University and remained a proud Tiger for the rest of his life. Upon graduation, he served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force and later went on to work at Gulf Oil for 32 years. In retirement, he was able to enjoy his "second" love of traveling the world. From Scotland to New Zealand, he and Gloria spent many years exploring all the beauty of God's world and making beautiful memories along the way.

In his downtime, you were guaranteed to find Charlie playing Gin Rummy, watching baseball or basketball, playing golf, or sharing a good conversation with friends or family over coffee and crullers. He had an affinity for the color red, "no matter what color it was." Whether it be in the mountains in Colorado, driving through the hill country in the spring time, or watching the leaves change in New England in the fall, he was always doing what he loved with those that he loved.

While no longer physically with us, Charlie will always be with us in our hearts. We rejoice that he is now with our Lord and Savior, likely singing The Battle Hymn of The Republic and saying, "if I were any better, I couldn't stand it."

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; father, Charles Howard Redkey; mother, Clara Heck Redkey. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Lenz Redkey; son, Chris Redkey and his wife Caren; daughter, Susan Moeller and her husband Jeff; and his beloved grandchildren Sarah Redkey, Michael Redkey, Elissa Moeller Hudgins (Robby) and David Moeller.
