Obituary

Charles Rufus Blackwell MD passed away on March 14, 2018 after a short illness.
"Charlie" as he was fondly called began his remarkable life on November 10, 1929. His parents Daisy Leach Blackwell and John D. Blackwell paused briefly in Roseville, OH for his birth and then continued their flight from the South as part of the great African American migration North to New York City.

Charlie was an excellent cook and a fine pianist who loved to listen to and play classical music and the songs from Broadway musicals. After graduating in 1948 from Straubenmuller Textile High School in Manhattan he trained as a nurse at Harlem Hospital. While raising six children he worked nights and weekends as a nurse anesthetist throughout his undergraduate and medical school training. Charlie attended Tuskegee University and ultimately earned a B.S. degree from Tennessee State in 1960.

In 1965 he graduated from Meharry Medical School. He was the first African American anesthesiology resident at Washington University in St. Louis' Barnes Hospital. Subsequently he headed the anesthesia departments at both Homer G. Phillips and DePaul Hospital and was an adjunct professor at Washington University School of Medicine.

Charlie met Judy at DePaul Hospital; they married on January 1, 1977. He and his loving wife of 41 years traveled around the world together and lived in St. Louis and Kansas City MO, Bakersfield CA, and Anchorage AK. While in Bakersfield he was also an adjunct professor at UCLA. Judy and Charlie retired to San Antonio in 2001.

In addition to his wife Judy, Charlie leaves behind his 93 year old sister, Lillian "Ruth" Blackwell; his seven adult children: Donna Blackwell (Richard Franklin), Anita Blackwell, Cheryl Blackwell, Charles Blackwell Jr. (Leva), Deborah Blackwell, David Blackwell (Linda) and Tracy Guynn; 17 grandchildren: Richard A. Franklin, James Curtis, Jr., Lea Franklin Zaslavksy, Jason Taylor, Damien Curtis, Adrienne Hill, Branden Lott, Carmel Brown, Sarah Petereit, Ryan Blackwell, D. Jordan Guynn, Brittany Peterson, Tiara Guynn, Desirae Blackwell, Stephen Spann Jr., Kristopher Spann and Marta Mieze as well as 13 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
