Colonel (Ret.) John Joseph Garcia, M.D. passed away Sunday, May 27, 2018 at his home in Canyon Lake, Texas.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Gorchow Garcia; and seven children: John J. Garcia and wife Tracey and their children Iris, Emma and Lily; Abel and wife Melissa and their children Jacob and Adam; Jacob; Simon; Antonina and husband Wade; Cadianna; and Fara.

Dr. Garcia was a graduate of UTSA and Galveston Medical School. He practiced family medicine and was the Medical Director for Harbour Hospice. He held the Diplomate of American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine.

He began his medical career as a paramedic with SAFD and was an instructor at San Antonio College.

His illustrious service career began with the Navy as a radioman in Vietnam. He transferred to the Air Force Reserve as a flight medic. His major duty assignments were: Brigade Surgeon 7th Infantry Division, invasion of Panama; Battalion Surgeon 1st Cavalry Division, liberation of Kuwait; Clinic Director, Fort Hood, Texas; Industrial Occupation Health Surgeon, Red River Army Depot; Battalion Surgeon, Texas Army National Guard. He ended his military career as the Army State Surgeon General for the State of Texas.

He was the Chief Medical Officer for Veterans Affairs Frank Tejeda and South Bexar County Outpatient Clinics; Chief Medical Officer Compensation and Pension Veterans Affairs at the Veterans Hospital San Antonio and Chief Taylor Burk Health Clinic Camp Bullis Texas.

His illustrious career included the Bronze Star Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (3rd Award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars (3rd award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon.

Reception to follow service in Reflection Room at Porter Loring Mortuary North. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
