Obituary

Daniel "Dan" George Webster III, age 80, died on Sunday, September 1, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas due to complications following surgery.

Dan was born in Dallas, Texas on May 5, 1939 to Dan G. and Carolyn Webster. Dan made every minute count as a student at Texas Tech University. During his college years, he was a Saddle Tramp, a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and active in student government. After graduating with a finance degree, Dan completed his Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Texas School of Law at Austin in 1964.

He moved to San Antonio upon graduation and began his legal career with a small law firm of only nine lawyers named Cox, Smith & Smith. Through the years, he ascended into leadership roles with the growing firm, including serving as Managing Director for Cox & Smith Incorporated for nearly a decade. The firm combined with Dykema Gossett in 2015.

Dan was a Former Director of the San Antonio Bar Association, State Junior Bar of Texas, and the San Antonio Junior Bar Association and is also a Sustaining Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and the San Antonio Bar Foundation. In 2018, Dan received the San Antonio Bar Association's Joe Frazier Brown, Sr. Award of Excellence and the San Antonio Business Journal's Lifetime Achievement Award.

He was a devoted advocate for children and families in our community. Dan's commitment to the YMCA spanned over 40-plus years. He was Chair of the Board and was currently acting as a board member and longtime counsel. He was honored to receive the 2006 YMCA Red Triangle Award. Dan was also a supporter of the Good Samaritan Center and served as a former director and Board Chair. He has served as a director for the Central Texas Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth, (for which he received the Lee Cusenbary Ethical Life Award in 2015), San Antonio Youth Literacy, Law Focused Education, Inc., The University of Texas Law Foundation, and the Texas Tech University Alumni Association.

An important part of Dan's work life revolved around relationships with his clients and colleagues. Dan had incredible mentors in his early years as a young lawyer and felt strongly that he should follow in their footsteps. Anyone who interacted with Dan knew they had his full attention and their best interests at heart.

Though his work gave him tremendous satisfaction and joy, his true loves were his wife, Molly, and his family. Dan enjoyed traveling with family, especially when his sister and nephews joined them in Maine, as well as long weekends playing boat captain and ski instructor at Lake LBJ for his daughter, Caroline, and her friends.

Though life was full, Dan would tell you life began when he became a grandfather to Charlotte and Christopher. Time spent skipping rocks on Mackinac Island, eating saltwater taffy in Maine and Watercolor, Florida with them were the memories he cherished the most.

Dan is preceded in death by his father, Daniel George Webster, Jr. He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Holloway Webster, wife Molly Marley Webster, sister Carol Webster Philp, daughter Caroline Webster Cain (Christopher), grandchildren Charlotte Molly Cain and Christopher Michael Cain, Jr., niece Elizabeth Ann Roach, nephews Scott Webster Philp (Miranda), Andrew Holloway Philp (Rebecca), and James Parker Philp (Michelle).

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6, 2019 at Christ Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, 231 East Rhapsody Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78216 or Christ Episcopal Church, 512 Belknap Place, San Antonio, Texas 78212.
