Obituary for David McGloin

July 17, 1949 - October 30, 2019
San Antonio, Texas | Age 70

David Gerard McGloin passed away on the morning of Wednesday October 30th, 2019, at the age of 70. He follows his parents, Bill and Mary McGloin; brother, Mark McGloin; and son Patrick McGloin. A dedicated father, he leaves behind his family who will miss the comfort and safety of his love for as long as they live.

He is survived by his five children, Robert McGloin, Dr. Kayla Ireland, Dr. Erin McGloin Shanahan, Shannon McGloin, and Kevin McGloin; brother, John McGloin; and ten grandchildren.

The second of three sons, David was born in Butte, Montana in 1949. He spent his youth exploring the mountains and streams of the Montana wilds with his father and brothers. After he graduated from Butte Central Catholic High School, he was drafted into the Army, in which he served honorably for three years. Near the end of his tenure in the military, David was transferred to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. He would make San Antonio his home for the remainder of his life.

After being discharged from the Army in 1971, David became an employee of Methodist Healthcare. For the next forty-eight years, he would continue to be a member of the Methodist Healthcare family. Starting as a surgical technologist, he would take on many roles at the hospital, both official and informal. From orderly to manager and comedian to mentor, David would perform any task, major or minor, that he felt would assist a patient or coworker. His focus was always what was best for others without regard to his own pride or others' sensibilities.

David's true passion was, and always had been, his family. He would say that the best time in his life was when he was raising his sons and daughters. Practices, games, ceremonies, meetings, masses, dances, lunches, dinners, shopping sprees, birthdays, holidays, lazy Sundays, cooking-show-Saturdays, impromptu makeup sessions, dress-ups, road trips, packing and moving, running from hurricanes, hunting, fishing, and early morning barbecue. He never missed any event. All he ever wanted to do was be around the ones he loved and make himself useful.

David was kind, gentle, and selfless. The value of a life is not what you leave behind for others but what you do for others while you are here. And David did so much for so many. From the Methodist OR to his kitchen and the Honduran Mountains to the Texas Hill Country, David truly touched people's lives. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune to meet him. None more so than his family, both blood and adopted. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

6:00 PM

Chaplain Edmond Knott will lead services. Treasured stories from family and friends will follow to celebrate the life of David. David will be cremated, and, later, his ashes will be interred in his beloved home, Montana. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to
