Obituary for David Richard Benavides, Jr.

April 2, 1949 - September 5, 2019
San Antonio, Texas | Age 70

David Richard Benavides, Jr., age 70, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2019. David was born on April 2, 1949 to David R. Benavides, Sr., and Josephine C. Benavides. After graduating from Jefferson High School, he pursued a bachelor's degree at UT Austin, but left prior to completing his degree to begin working full-time. On October 7, 1973 he married the love of his life Sylvia Ann Lopez, and they were blessed with four beautiful children – Laurie, David III, Brian, and Natalie. With several of his own children in college, he returned to school and completed his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. David was a loving and wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a devoted friend to many.
David's love for his family and friends was undeniable. He was known for his big heart, his fun-loving spirit, his dedication to his family and friends, and his love of life. His quick wit and sense of humor was something that left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. He excelled at inspiring laughter wherever he went. As a young adult, he started playing softball and was well known for his homerun hitting ability - gaining him the nickname "Bear." When he finally had to give up softball, he picked up new hobbies such as hunting and fishing, woodworking, and photography. He was passionate about photography and rarely went anywhere without his camera. Throughout his life, David loved the outdoors and never missed an opportunity to go hunting and fishing with his sons, brother-in-law, Mark, and many friends.
After 30+ years working at AT&T, David was able to retire early and spend his time taking long road trips with his wife and creating precious memories as PawPaw to his 10 grandchildren – Audrey, Niko, Vaneza, Savannah, Marlow, Lila, Rowyn, Quinn, Liam, and Tori. One of his favorite places to go during his travels was Las Vegas, but if he couldn't make it all the way there, Laughlin, Shreveport or Lake Charles would do just fine. All his life he remained an avid Texas Longhorns fan and never missed a Thanksgiving college football game. David loved a good steak, could eat Mexican food everyday (especially if it included his mother-in-law Victoria's homemade tortillas), and enjoyed hanging out by the pool and barbecuing during family gatherings.
David was preceded in death by his father David Sr., and his mother, Josephine. He is survived by his wife Sylvia, his four children, Laurie, David, Brian, and Natalie, his brother, Robert, several nieces, nephews, and his ten grandchildren.
A Rosary and Memorial Service celebrating David's life will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Porter Loring North on 2102 North Loop 1604 East at 10:30 a.m.
