Obituary for Dolores McCarrick Mitchell

December 27, 1930 - December 31, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 88

... will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her ...

Dolores McCarrick Mitchell peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones on the last day of 2018 after a brief illness. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was married to her soulmate, John Keith Mitchell, for over 66 years. From this union they had six children. Survivors include her husband, John, and daughters Kathleen Mitchell Hawkins (John Hawkins), Anne Marie Mitchell (Gorman), Paula Mitchell Welder (Amos Welder) and Nancy Leigh Mitchell. Twelve grandchildren (Justin Hawkins, Ramona Welder Seemann, Ashley Hawkins Henry, Hunter Hawkins, Cuatro Welder, Chase Gorman, Megan Mitchell, Ben Welder, Madelaine Gorman King, Tara Mitchell, Daniel Mitchell, and Melissa Mitchell), ten great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews were among her beloved family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Marian and James McCarrick, sons Blake Stephen Mitchell and Michael Sean Mitchell and her grandson Sean Keith Mitchell.

Dolores graduated from the University of Texas-Austin Plan II program with a BA in English literature. She was an exceptional artist, talented interior designer, consummate traveler, avid reader and fashionista extraordinaire. She loved movies and could name any film and actor with ease. A devout Catholic, Dolores attended St. Pius X, St. Anthony de Padua and Incarnate Word parishes. She was a long-time supporter of the University of the Incarnate Word, having attended high school there and serving for many years as the Board Chairperson.

We would like to thank all her caregivers for their tender, loving care: Guadalupe Blackard and the staff at The Village at Incarnate Word. We will all miss her beautiful smile and letters which lit up our faces and let us know we were loved. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of the Incarnate Word Fine Arts Department, University of the Incarnate Word Library and The Village at Incarnate Word in her honor.
