Obituary

Don W. Saunders passed away peacefully on May 1, 2017, in the presence of his adoring wife and children. He was born on September 8, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas, to Frank and Ruby (Robinson) Weltens, and was later the stepson of longtime San Antonio attorney, T.J. Saunders.

Don was a lifetime resident of San Antonio, attending North East High School and graduating in 1959 as the first Class President of the inaugural class of Robert E. Lee High School. He went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a baseball scholarship, ultimately graduating from St. Mary's University with a Juris Doctor degree in 1966. He would then go on to a distinguished law career and life of community service spanning over 50 years, highlights of which include serving with distinction as a Captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps, recognition by the North East Independent School District Board of Trustees for meritorious service on the Board of Equalization, serving as President of the Rotary International Club of San Antonio, and most recently, serving as General Counsel to Hermann Sons Life and other San Antonio corporations.

Don took great pride in being a member of the State Bar and representing the legal profession with dignity and respect. Hard work, accessibility, no nonsense, common sense, and smarts were the hallmarks of his practice and his son, Charles, similarly a graduate of St. Mary's University School of Law, followed him into the legal profession.

Don was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, photography, and in particular, SCUBA diving, both as a member of the SAINTS and as a PADI-certified instructor. He was an unwavering fan of the San Antonio Spurs.

Don unconditionally loved those around him. He was at his best, and most in his element, as a gentle mentor and teacher, whether extracting the essence of a complex legal matter, or teaching his children and grandchildren how to hunt and shoot, or espousing the simple pleasure of fishing.

Don is survived by his wife Sharon, daughter Kathryn Craven, and her husband Jonathan and grandsons Astin and Tyler, son Charles Saunders, and his wife Suzanne and grandchildren Jackson and Josephine, stepdaughter Lorene Kohleffel, and her husband Michael and grandchildren Jacob, Luke, and Olivia, sister Janet Saunders, and sister Susan Ford, and her husband John and sons Mark and Joseph Maniscalco.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017, at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78212. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M., with the service commencing promptly at 11:30 A.M.
