Obituary

Donald Edward Miller, passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2017, surrounded by his family and gifted caregivers. He was born on August 29, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas, and was the only child of Marcella Marie Cavanaugh and Elmer Tilmon Miller.

Don, a fourth generation Texan and lifetime resident of San Antonio, graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1955. He then went to Tulane University, receiving a BBA degree in 1959 and commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. While at Tulane, he was also president of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma. After graduating, Don served our country as a naval officer on the USS Isherwood, as part of the Western Pacific Fleet. He had wonderful memories and colorful stories from his time in the military, none made a more powerful impression on him than steaming into a very calm and peaceful Pearl Harbor at 0700 on a Sunday morning and rendering honors as they passed the charred remains of the USS Arizona. After completing active duty in 1961, Don returned to San Antonio and worked for the Tower Life Insurance Company and Church's Chicken, before opening the Donald E. Miller Agency in 1974. Don had many professional successes throughout his career, but he considered the relationships he developed, with clients and associates, as one of his greatest accomplishments. Don retired in 2011.

Don always talked about being blessed with stability. He treasured spending time with the love of his life, Betty Gene, aka "Babe", his five children, 10 grandchildren and lots of fun loving friends. When he was not having lunch with Babe at La Fonda, he could be found on the golf course or playing gin rummy with his buddies in the 19th Hole, or the Men's Grill. Of course, we all knew he was most content at home with Babe, a glass of wine, and his beloved cats. His friends had several nicknames for him – the two he heard most were The Tree, for obvious reasons, and Water, that stemmed from his golfing days as part of the great Alamo Heights Mules teams of the 50's. Indeed Don was larger than life and one of a kind. His gentle way and big heart were only overshadowed by his unmistakable laugh that made anyone who heard it smile.

Don and Betty Gene were members of Trinity Baptist Church. Other memberships included The San Antonio Country Club, Oak Hills Country Club, Club Giraud, the Order of the Alamo, the San Antonio German Club, Eggplant Unlimited and Los Compadres. He served on several boards along the way, enjoying both business and philanthropic pursuits.

Don was preceded in death by his loving wife and parents. He is survived by daughter Lisa Miller Aldrich and husband, Steve; daughter Laura Virginia Miller; son Marcus Cottingham Miller and wife Carolyn; son John Blake Miller and wife Cindy; and son Donald Edward Miller, Jr. and wife Amy; his ten grandchildren Miller, Carson, Matthew, Michael, Heather, Meritt, Craig, Carlee, Avery and John; and great grandchildren Bodhi and Bridget. The family would like to thank Joann Valentine, Gloria Contreras, Joyce Moreno, and Gwen Marshall for their years of compassion and devoted care.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
