Obituary for Mr. Donald Don Maddox

January 26, 1933 - February 10, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 85

Don passed away peacefully on February 10, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Tommie Ann Bailey.

Don was born January 26, 1933, in San Antonio to father, Samuel A. Maddox and mother, Nora Kennedy. He is survived by his caring wife of 61 years, Marie; sons, Steven, and Mark Maddox (Lucinda); daughters, Cynthia Jupe, and Kimberly Rustan (Mark); seven grandsons, Aaron (Jessica) and Jonathan Jupe, Matthew and Samuel Maddox, Harrison, Grant and Hayden Rustan.

Following graduation from Brackenridge High School, Don served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean conflict. He then returned home and began the career of his lifetime for the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, while also attending and graduating from Trinity University. He began his 38-year career with the Parks and Recreation Department as a playground leader. Later, he was named Superintendent of Recreation with the highlight of his career being appointed as Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation.

During his lifetime, Don held many leadership positions in his job and the community. He served as President of the Texas Recreation and Parks Association and Executive Secretary of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. He also founded the San Antonio Amateur Softball Association and served on its Board for the rest of his lifetime. He was passionate about establishing equal opportunities for girls in athletics, especially softball, and was instrumental in having softball added to the public school athletic programs. He was a strong advocate for the youth and fought especially hard to establish programs and community centers in underserved areas of San Antonio. He founded the Prime Time After School Program and the Night Owl Program so youth had a safe place to go at night. After work hours, he spent many years coaching the Pop Warner Apache Football teams, CYO basketball, softball, baseball and track.

Upon retirement, Don enjoyed playing golf regularly with his golfing buddies, served as President of the Brackenridge Alumni Assn. and on the Board of the Old Timers Sports Assn. He and Marie traveled extensively and especially enjoyed some good times on gambling trips with friends and family. Don was a devoted, caring and giving father to his children, but in his latter years his pride and joy were his seven grandsons who knew him as "Papaw". He and Marie attended all events in which they were involved.
