Obituary for Doris Cox Walker

San Antonio, Texas

Doris Cox Walker, 98, went to be with the Lord in December, 2019 at her home in San Antonio, Texas. She was born to Dessie Ferell and Cloe Cox on the Twin States Oil Lease between Sapulpa and Tulsa, OK. She grew up on various oil leases in OK. She and her siblings, Harold, Dortha and Sid, had many playmates with other kids living nearby. She graduated from Bowlegs High School in Bowlegs, OK at age 16.
She went to Tulsa Business School in Tulsa, OK. She began her career as office manager for a company that sold used oil field supplies. Later she worked for Gulf Oil in the Tulsa area as the purchasing agent along with other office duties.
She married Glenn Walker in 1945, an Air Force weatherman who grew up on a nearby oil lease, and loved her new role as an officer's wife. They were stationed in Oklahoma City, Ohio, Bermuda, Guam, and finally in San Antonio. Their son Terry was born just before they went to Bermuda. Doris often prepared a dinner, on short notice, for 20 hungry Airmen that Glenn decided needed a home cooked meal.
After retiring in San Antonio, Glenn and Doris opened a business helping physicians and dentists set up offices, providing capital, equipment, business training and bookkeeping services. Doris was instrumental in the business, was the bookkeeper for many clients and for the home office. After Glenn died in 1988, Doris continued bookkeeping for several of her "doctors" until she was 90. Doris sent Christmas letters to far-flung military and civilian friends until her mid 90's. She always had a basketful of cards in return which resulted in visiting many friends all over the US.
Always the perfect hostess and Air Force wife, she harbored a passion for the armed forces that stayed with her until the end. Doris loved to tell stories of her Air Force travels and the wonderful friends she made. She was an avid fisherwoman and, usually, out-fished everyone else in the boat. And she was lovingly known as "Mom Walker" to many of Terry's fraternity brothers during his time at UT Austin.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Kristy Walker of San Antonio; Linda Byers, traveling companion and daughter of a military friend whom Doris claimed as her own; her beloved caregiver, Diana Scruggs; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Dwayne and Joyce Walker; sister-in-law, Letha Cox; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on December 17th, 2019.
