Obituary for Dorothy Pfeiffer Doehne

December 22, 1923 - September 24, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 94

Dorothy Pfeiffer Doehne died September 24, 2018, after a recent illness. Dorothy, the youngest child of Ella Schmidt and Joe Pfeiffer, was born December 22, 1923, in Lockhart, Texas. She was a sixth generation Texan, a descendant of pioneer German settlers who arrived in New Braunfels in 1844. She remained proud of her German heritage all her life. Most important to Dorothy was her Catholic faith and her family. After growing up on the family farm in Maxwell, Texas, she graduated from high school in Weimar, Texas, in 1941. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College before moving to San Antonio to become a medical technologist at Santa Rosa Hospital. After meeting Louis Carl Doehne on a blind date to a Texas A&M football game, they married a year later in August, 1948. They had 58 years together until his death in 2006. Dorothy was the last surviving member of their Supper Club, a monthly Thursday evening dinner where her sense of humor was enjoyed by all. Dorothy worked until her children were born and then became an active volunteer in many organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the CPA auxiliary, and her church.

Her most significant volunteer activity was building the Republican Party in Bexar County and Texas. One of a small group who started the GOP in the 1960's, she served in several positions and offices including precinct chairman, member and Secretary of the State Republican Executive Committee, and rose to Vice Chairman of the RPT in 1978-1982. She was a delegate to four Republican national conventions and a Presidential elector in 1992. Her proudest accomplishment was serving as co-chairman of Ronald Reagan's Presidential campaigns in Texas in 1976 and 1980. Many early local elected officials are indebted for her leadership and fundraisers in her backyard.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Doehne, her son-in-law, Wayne Rath, her six siblings and 70 first cousins.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Diane Rath and husband, Gary Candy; Nancy Wolgamott and husband, Jim; and Mark Doehne and wife, Margo Harding. Also surviving are grandchildren and their spouses: Reagan Rath and husband, Paco Gonzaba; Katherine Plumb and husband, John; Anne Kahle and husband, Walker; Allie Pappas and husband, H.D.; and Zackery Czech; and step granddaughters Courtney DeLaGarza and Cassey Rath. She leaves behind eight beloved great grandchildren: Mary, Jack and Kackie Plumb, Augie and Teddy Kahle, and Harris, Gregory, and Andrew Pappas. She will be missed by her constant companion Collies, Watch and Prissy.

The family would like to thank Cynthia Slavin and Maricela Luevano for their care the past several months.

Her family will hold a visitation at Porter Loring Mortuary Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 5:30 in the evening with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 28th, 1:00pm at Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church,15415 Red Robin Rd., followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery
