Obituary

It is with great joy that the children of Dorris Desroche announce the passing from this life to the next after a long struggle with dementia. It is a joyful occurrence because she has been mercifully released from the effects of her disease, and now sits in the presence of her savior. Likely, she is laughing, dancing and making all the saints and angels in heaven smile.

Dorris Ermeline Desroche, age 84, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2020 in New Braunfels, Texas with her family by her side. She was born August 27, 1935 in Akron, Ohio to Doris and Harold Viningre.

Dorris lived a life of service. She spent 2 years in nursing school prior to marrying her only love, George Desroche. She spent the next 20 years as the spouse of an Air Force officer, so she managed the household of four children through daily life, and numerous relocations often while her husband was away serving our country. She volunteered as a room mother, Girl Scout leader, and catechist for many years. As her children grew and her husband retired from the military, she set her sights on business endeavors. She became a branch manager for Sarah Coventry Jewelry and later the owner of a ladies' large-size clothing shop. Although she became a mother working-outside-the-home, she continued to serve by continuing to teach catechism and also serving as a mentor for young married couples. Once she conquered her business goals, she opted to go to work for the Catholic Church as the Director of Religious Education which gave her much self-confidence. Once retired, she travelled with her beloved husband around the country in their RV. They belonged to an RV club where they enjoyed the company of friends by playing card games and sharing stories. Dorris was so proud to be a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her happiest times were when she visited with her family. For nearly 11 years, she sorely missed her husband. It is refreshing to imagine them together again in heaven.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Maj. George Desroche, USAF (Ret.) as well as brothers Michael and Sonny Viningre. Dorris is survived by her children Cynthia Landrum and husband Craig, Guy Desroche, Greg Desroche and wife Anna Marie, and Renee Held and husband Mike; grandchildren Angela, Doug, Jimmy, Tim, Brian, and Kayla; 7 great grandchildren; siblings Carol Neyland, Don Viningre and wife Mary, and Chris Viningre and wife Marty; as well as numerous extended family members and a lifetime of friends.

Her children would like to thank the numerous staff who tended to her on her long journey with dementia. A warm feeling of gratitude is extended to the folks at Los Patios Independent Living, Brookdale Alamo Heights, Memory Care of New Braunfels, and Alamo Hospice. Each person who worked with her blessed her with kindness and love. May they be blessed in return.

Dorris will be laid to rest with her husband in the Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. In lieu of flowers please consider making memorial contributions towards a Food Bank in your local community.
