Obituary

Dr. Neil Arthur Morgan, 81, passed away at home in San Antonio on January 23rd with his loved ones by his side. Neil was born in Brooklyn, New York along with a fraternal twin, Melvin, on October 18, 1938 and raised by his mother Rose Chernow Laufer. After attending high school in Great Neck, NY, where he was the New York State long jump champion, Neil attended Boston University on an athletic scholarship for his undergraduate studies, and then dental school at Loyola University in New Orleans.

Following graduation from Loyola, Neil moved to Houston and began practicing dentistry. It was here that he met the love of his life, Janis, in 1968. They were engaged after only five weeks and married 12 weeks later. Despite their brief courtship, it was clearly meant to be as they celebrated their 50th anniversary last February.

Following their whirlwind romance, Janis and Neil settled in San Antonio. In January 1970, a daughter, Beth Ellyn was born followed by another daughter, Kerri Lynn, in October 1973.

Neil practiced dentistry and was appointed by Governor Bill Clements to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners where he served as Secretary. Always a compassionate person with a heart of gold, Neil volunteered his time for Family Services and was instrumental in creating heightened awareness of Ross Perot's War on Drugs initiative in San Antonio. After retiring from dentistry, Neil was an integral part of the family real estate business.

Coupled with his passion for inventions and his outside of the box thinking, Neil was always ahead of the curve with his creative ideas. His ideas (that may have seemed outlandish to others at the time) often came to fruition years later. Neil had a gift for creating beautiful natural habitats for backyard wildlife. When he built it, they would come. He enjoyed fishing the gulf coast bays with his family and was a great captain of his family vessels. His zany personality and unconventional ways were cherished by everyone who knew him.

Neil was a wealth of information for his daughters and grandchildren and could be overheard talking with them about everything from entrepreneurship to steam trains to ladies' fashion. He was a voracious reader and gatherer of information of all types. He could not be beat in Trivial Pursuit.

Neil is survived by his wife, Janis; daughters, Beth Morgan Tuder, and her husband, Dmitry, and Kerri Smith and her husband, Ashley; grandchildren, Ben and Ava Smith, and Mila and Grant Tuder; and his loyal and beloved rescue dog and companion, Ringo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Chernow Laufer; stepfather, Dr. Morris Laufer; twin brother, Dr. Melvin Morgan; and father, Martin Forman.
