Obituary

Eileen Elizabeth Rovira, age 94, of San Antonio, Texas died peacefully on Monday, February 18, 2019 in the company of family members. Eileen was born in London, England on August 13, 1924 to William and Elizabeth Deeble. She told many stories of growing up as a London "east-ender", being a child evacuee prior to the war, and her subsequent survival of the London blitz. Eileen served during World War II in London as a stenographer for the New Zealand War Ministry. She met her beloved "Bill", an American soldier, on a blind date. Eileen was married in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1946 to William P. Rovira, after a 3-year separation due to the war. A homemaker and mother of six, Eileen was a local activist who defended just causes with a passion that gained her renown in the Austin political community. A devout Catholic of St. Ignatius Church, she supported the parish school and volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store on historic South Congress Avenue. Eileen was the driving force behind the Blunn Creek Nature Preserve in South Austin, igniting the citizenry of south Austin, and the Austin City Council to convert a planned high-density construction project into a conservation effort.

In her last years, Eileen was most struck by the love that surrounded her. She commented daily, and with a sense of awe, on how blessed she was in her family and friends.

Eileen is survived by: William P Rovira Jr and wife Mariela, Stanley Rovira and wife Mary, Michael Rovira and wife Dana, Susan Rovira and husband Leo Gallia, Daniel Rovira and wife Kristina, Janice Ratka and husband Jeff, and Cheryl Timmins and husband Jack. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many more for whom she served as a de facto parent or grandparent.
