Obituary

Eric Anthony van Hell went to walk with the Lord on August 27th, 2020 at the age of 29 after a lifetime of many medical challenges and disabilities. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on April 7th, 1991.

Eric was baptized, received his first holy communion and his faith confirmed by Arch Bishop Patrick Flores.

Despite his many physical disabilities he went on to graduate from East Central High School in 2013. While in school he was the 2nd grade spelling bee champion at Pecan Valley Elementary, he was given many awards, performed in several plays at Heritage Middle School and during his participation in the Special Olympics he won a gold medal in bowling. His ability to achieve these many school accomplishments was due to his devoted nurse Jeff Rinaldi who precedes Eric in death.

In his life Eric traveled to Mexico, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, France and many states in the US. In 1995 the Make a Wish Foundation granted his wish to visit Disney World, and with the assistance of Eric's cousin Sergio "Checo" Luna he was able to meet the legendary Mr. Mouse (Mickey Mouse).

In 1999 Eric won Camper of the Week, the highest honor given to a single camper voted on by the staff, at Camp C.A.M.P. Eric was able to experience swimming, horseback riding, archery and various other activities not normally capable by a child of his medical status.

Eric was a fierce and devoted Spurs fan who attended many games and was able to meet various players throughout the years.

Eric is preceded in death by his grandfather James A. Cuellar and survived by his endlessly devoted mother, Yvonne van Hell; his siblings Nicole Smith and her husband Jay Smith, Patricia Castaneda and Michelle van Hell; his grandmother Sylvia Cuellar; his aunts Yvette Elizalde and her husband Pete Elizalde, Lizette Eckman and her husband James Eckman; his uncle James A. Cuellar; his cousins James C. and Lauren Cuellar; his beloved niece, Emma Smith; and many loving family members all over the world. Eric's ability to inspire bravery and bring joy to the world will be missed eternally.

The fullness and quality of Eric's life was due in part to the countless nurses, doctors, caregivers, teachers and therapists who's tireless dedication elevated his life. The family would also like to thank Kevin Primeaux (nurse with 25 years of service), Cindy Davis (nurse with 22 years of service), Angelica Sanders, Martin Hernandez and Alan Askaran. Special thanks to Special Kids Care and their wonderful staff for providing his nursing services for 20 years.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at Porter Loring Mortuary.
