Obituary

Evelyn Harriett Hitchcock Hodges Whitley, 82, died January 19, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. Evelyn was born in Atlanta, Georgia on October 31, 1937. Her Halloween birthday was always a source of great entertainment to her and the rest of her family. Especially when it was revealed that her husband, Claude, was born on Christmas day.
Evelyn was a great lover of life. She loved people. Her children were a great source of pride to her. After both of her sons died, she still considered her daughters-in-law a part of her family. Her daughter, Julie, was such a joy to her Mom and she loved their long telephone conversations. Evelyn loved her grandchildren to a fault. When granddaughter Kayla was born Evelyn immediately went into Grandma mode. She loved spending time with Kayla and they spent many happy productive hours together. Next came, David who called her "Grammy" and named her his BFFL (Best Friend for Life). Last but not least was precious smiley Sophia who dubbed Evelyn not Grammy, not Grandma but Geeta and the name stuck. She came to the family as a very special loved 10-month-old. Evelyn considered herself a "Professional Grammy" and often voiced the thought that she should have been a Nanny by profession because of her love of babies and children.
Evelyn moved to Wichita Falls, Texas from Chattanooga, Tennessee when her divorced Mother married Evelyn's stepfather, Dr. Claude Hodges. She loved being a teen in the 50's in the small city. Evelyn met her future husband, Claude Whitley, when she was 12 (in the summer of 1949) and he was 14. Her mother did not approve at first of a boy who drove a car, but Claude persisted. They were married on April 11, 1958. The first 9 years of their marriage were spent in Wichita Falls. In 1967 Claude was transferred (by Texas Electric Service Co) to Fort Worth.
Evelyn held several positions in the educational and business world, but her favorite position of all time was as Administrative Assistant of the Rotary Club of Fort Worth. She loved "her Rotarians" and retired after 15 Years of Service to become a "Nanny" to grandson David. Evelyn had a quirky sense of humor and will always be remembered for her laughter and her love of life.
Evelyn was preceded in death, by her mother, Juanita Grant Hodges, her brother, David Frederick Hitchcock (who died at age 8), step-father Dr. Claude Hodges her birth father Zach Hitchcock, her step-mother, Lou Hitchcock sons, David Matthews Whitley and Keith Lee Whitley. She is survived by husband, Claude, daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Randy of San Antonio daughters-in-law Jennifer Dowdell Whitley of Austin, Juanita Whitley Middleton, of Grandview, half-brother Rick Hitchcock and wife, Pam of Chattanooga, TN, half-sister, Cheryl Hitchcock Vickers and husband Frank of Cookeville, TN, precious grandchildren, Kayla Michelle Whitley, David Matthew Schuessler and Sophia Lee Schuessler.
