Obituary

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Francis Edward O'Neill, Jr. on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. "Ed" as he preferred to be called, was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 6, 1941. He was preceded in death by his younger brothers, Thomas R. O'Neill, and Joseph A. O'Neill, MD.; his cousins, John O'Neill, and Robert "Bob" O'Neill; uncles, Col. John J. O'Neill (Georgie), and James R. O'Neill, MD (Florence); his mother, Estella Schellhase O'Neill; and father, Francis Edward O'Neill, MD.

Ed earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from St. Mary's University, and his Master's degree in Chemistry from The University of Houston while teaching. After attaining his Master's degree, he enlisted in the United States Army where he worked as a bio-chemist in the Medical Corps. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he studied in Philadelphia for his PhD in Chemistry. In 1973, Ed joined the Associated Milk Producers and served in various capacities in all the southern region's plants. He was Superintendent of the Muenster, Texas cheese plant until 1976 when he was made Plant Manager of the butter plant in Oklahoma City.

In 1985, Ed joined the Environmental Protection Agency where he proudly worked for thirty-two years in the Houston Lab. Ed was nationally known as a Preeminent Air Analyst, having worked on many high-profile sites, most recently on chloroprene issues with the Denka LaPlace site. He was a member of numerous national work groups for air toxics methods and received many EPA awards for clean up work on natural and manmade disasters.

Ed was a voracious reader, world traveler, World War II buff, as well as fluent in Spanish and German. He loved attending the symphony and opera, preferring to listen to classical and opera music than "oldies" of his generation or the "cackle" and "twang" of Country Western.

He took immense pride in his work and his genuine and personable nature earned him great respect from his colleagues and friends. He loved participating in "fun runs", frequently finishing in top order in his age group, always enjoying the fellowship afterwards. When he had the opportunity, he would enjoy snow skiing or scuba diving, becoming certified in Akumal, Mexico, December of 2003.

Ed is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary O'Neill Kimball (John); nephews, John P. Kimball III (Anna), Christopher F. Kimball DDS and Thomas J. O'Neill MD; nieces, Jennifer O'Neill Ross (Dan) and Maureen O'Neill Clark (Chad); great-nephews and great-nieces, Phin and Simon, Taylor and Stella, Joseph and Jonathan, Madeline, Connor and Cameron; sister-in-law, Christina O'Neill Chitwood (Bill); aunt, Jane O'Neill; cousins, Caitlin and Devin O'Neill.

The family would like to thank the nurses, his physical and speech therapists from Encompass Home Health, and his home helpers for their caring and kindness; Rena Craft and Augustina, Elizabeth, Blessing, and Maureen from "At Your Side" Home Health Care.

Visitation will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 13, 2018, at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches Road, San Antonio, TX, followed by funeral service and entombment.
