Obituary

Franklin Bruce Whitacre was born on January 1, 1942 in Decatur, Illinois to Gladys Isabelle and Harold Forrest Whitacre, who are deceased. He lived his entire life in Decatur until he went off to college and then joined the Air Force. Frank joined the military and spent over 21 years in the military and then joined Civil Service to spend a total of 49 years serving his country. He became a Texan and graduated from Southwest Texas State University. He really didn't see the world while in the Air Force since most of his assignments were in the United States except for the Azores and Okinawa. He met his wife, Linda, while he was stationed in San Antonio and they married on June 7, 1975. Frank is survived by two older brothers and by three sons Michael, Jeffrey, and David and their spouses Kerri, Beth and Kim. He has seven grandchildren: Kaeley, Kyra, Blake, Austin, Andrew, Austin, and James. His newest grandson came into his life in May and is a joy to him even when life looked grim.

Frank was very involved in the community. He was an Assistant Scout Leader for Boy Scout Troop #234 and went on numerous camping trips with them. He was a Baseball Coach of Perrin Beitel Little League for several years. Also, he acted as Membership Chairman for Madison's Booster Club and Air Force Academy Parent's Club. He was always there to assist when anyone needed him.

When the nest became empty, he started traveling. It took some persuasion to get him to go on the first cruise but after that he always said that his bag was packed and ready. He went on a total of 37 cruises. He visited countries such as Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy and the list goes on. Of course, when he was not cruising, he loved to fly to Hawaii.

Church was also a big part of his life. You could always find him on the second pew from the back. He truly disliked it when he got to the point that it was hard for him to attend. He fought a hard battle with cancer, and finally, cancer won. He had struggled with it since 2009.

Everyone who knew Frank truly liked him, and he will be missed by all.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
