Obituary for Lt. Col. Fred Jacob Byrod, US Army (Ret)

September 12, 1946 - February 19, 2018
San Antonio, Texas | Age 71

... always available to help friends and family ...

A proud veteran, father and grand-père, Fred J. Byrod, age 71, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018. He was born on September 12, 1946 in Bryn Mawr, PA to wonderful parents Fred and Doris Byrod.

Fred began a long career with the U.S. military as a Special Forces Division MAC-V-SOG combat medic in Vietnam. He continued to serve his country in Desert Shield, and later with positions in the US Military Medical Command and Dental Command. After 33 years of dedicated and loyal service in the US Army, he honorably retired.

Throughout his life, he was known for making easy friendships and was always available to help friends and family with projects. He found pleasure in working on vehicles, running, reading, traveling, attending auto shows all over the world, home renovations, spending time at the beach, and watching tennis. The day he passed, he was excited to learn his favorite athlete, tennis great Roger Federer, reclaimed his No. 1 ranking for the first time in over 5 years. Through his love of books, he instilled a love of reading in his children and grandchildren. He also was a leader in making a more sustainable and beautiful Earth for everyone in his efforts to recycle anything and everything.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his children: Michelle Byrod, Stephanie McKennon and husband Patrick; Robert Byrod and wife Alexandra; grandchildren: Brenna, Amelia and Isabella; his brother, Robert Byrod, and many other wonderful family and friends.

We will miss his almost encyclopedic knowledge, love of telling stories, and his unique words and phrases. He had a big heart, made friends around the world, and was very modest and humble throughout his life. Fred will be missed by his family and friends and all those lives he touched.

Interment will be private for the family. A public remembrance gathering will be announced in the near future. Please contact for more information.
