Obituary for Freddie Junior Harwell

December 16, 2018
Spring Branch, Texas

Freddie Junior Harwell, age 87, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2018.

Fred is survived by his wife of 65 years, Annie Merle Harwell; four sons, Freddie Lenn Harwell and his wife, Vicki, Michael Dale Harwell, Sr. and his wife, Teresa, Gregory Allen Harwell and his wife, Anna, and Jeffrey Scott Harwell; grandchildren, Michael Harwell, Christina James, Amanda Harwell, Sabrina Bowers, Tanya Harwell-Hernandez, Bradley James, Michelle Little, Christina Wallace, Kevin Harwell, Vanessa Harwell, and Rachael Harwell; 16 great grandchildren; and four sisters and one brother.

There is a joyful reunion going on in heaven with those who predecease him: Father - Fred Martin Harwell, Mother - Gertrude Harwell Birdsong, and siblings, Velma Carter, Carroll Harwell and Jerry Harwell.

Fred grew up in Poplar Bluff, Missouri as one of nine children. His love of and desire to serve his country led him to enter the United States Air Force in 1950. In March of 1953, he met Annie Merle in Belleville, Illinois, where he won a coin toss to determine the lucky guy who got to go talk to her. Six months later, on September 5th, they were married in Meridian, Mississippi, a union that lasted 65 years. Fred continued his service to this country for 24 years, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sargent. During those years in the USAF, Fred and Annie Merle, along with their growing family lived in Belleville, Illinois, San Antonio, Texas, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the Philippines, and Anchorage, Alaska. Fred did three TDY tours, twice in Korea and once in the Baffin Islands.

After retiring to San Antonio from the Air Force, Fred took a job with Exxon, where he served in management for many years. He eventually retired from Exxon to spend more time traveling in his motor home with Annie Merle. They visited many locations in the United States, always finding time to make their appearances in his hometown in Missouri or Annie Merle's family in Mississippi, or wherever they could find family to share their love with. Fred and Annie Merle enjoyed having their grandchildren for weeks during the Summer, where they would fish, play games or cards, hunt, craft, and garden. Of course, we can't write this memoir without mentioning Fred's devotion to his beloved baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Go Redbirds!

Fred was known for his tough exterior and his tender heart. He had a mischievous sense of humor, was a man of confidence, a leader, and the patriarch of his family. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

The family will receive friends at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at Porter Loring Mortuary.

11:30 A.M.

Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael D. Harwell, Jr., Kevin Harwell, Michael D. Harwell III, Brett Harwell, Josh Little, Greg Bowers, Brad James, and Eric Ortiz.
