Obituary for Gary Lee Thomas

April 29, 1937 - October 11, 2019
San Antonio, Texas | Age 82

Our beloved Father, Husband, and Friend, Gary Lee Thomas is now in the arms of our savor. He left this world on Friday, October 11th, 2019 at the Kindred Hospice Home in San Antonio; after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gaylene; his three sons Jeff, Troy, Mike and their lovely wives; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and many close friends.

Gary was born and raised in Ogden, Utah where he learned the values of family, honesty, servitude, hard work, humbleness and kindness from his parents Harry and Violet Thomas. In his early years, he raised and sold rabbits before hiring on as a bagboy at the local grocery store while attending Weber High School. After his initial start at the local Bush Market grocery store, he spent the rest of his life in the grocery business.

After working a few years at Bush Market, Gary joined the Albertsons company in 1961 where he moved into management and began his retail career. He touched the lives of so many employees and partners in such a wonderful way. While working with Albertsons he moved through the management ranks until reaching his ultimate goal of Store Manager. As a Store Manager for Albertsons he ran stores in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado while he and Gaylene raised 3 young boys. In 1969 they made the move of their life and joined the H-E-B grocery company in San Antonio, Texas. Gary worked for 25 years for H-E-B and held many positions including Store Manager, Store Director, Grocery Supervisor and District Manager before retiring at the age of 55.

Gary always had a passion for family and traveling and managed to do some traveling while working in the retail business. After retirement, he put the pedal to the metal and began to see the world. He started his travels by merging travel and family together by taking the grand kids on annual vacations all over the United States in his Chevy Suburban. Gary and Gaylene traveled often with their good friends; Vic and Lydia Estrada, Paul and Sue Speas and Herb and Lou Flatman. They visited so many places throughout the world and experienced over 30 cruises (if you know Gary it was all on a tight budget!).

Gary's favorite times of the year were the holidays. He loved being with family and taking full advantage of the holiday seasons. Bringing family together and seeing all of the kids, grand kids, great grand kids and friends during those special times of year gave him immense joy. These are the moments in life that meant the most to him.
