Gary Lynn Newman passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 11, 2017, from an undiagnosed heart condition at the age of 60.
Gary was full of life and love and freely shared his abundant warmth and kindness with each and every person he came to know. He loved to make others happy by offering a helping hand, sharing a smile or a laugh, or simply being present during another's time of need. Gary's presence was extremely positive and vibrant, and he brought smiles and laughter with him wherever he went. Gary loved his family immensely and devoted himself to their care and happiness. He loved to travel, he loved the outdoors, and he recently swam Alcatraz. He will be so deeply missed by all who knew and loved his handsome face and beautiful spirit.
Gary was born into a military family at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He grew up in Crete, Japan, San Antonio, and Alabama. Gary attended the University of Texas at Austin where he met his wife Sharon, and they were married for 38 years. Gary was an officer in the United States Air Force for four years, and he earned his MBA at Our Lady of the Lake University. His first job in San Antonio was at Ray Ellison Homes, and he spent the past 27 years at USAA and USAA Real Estate Company.
Gary is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Bea Newman, and his dear brother, Nathan Newman. Gary leaves behind one son, Zachary Newman-26; one daughter, Ashlie Newman-31; and his wife, Sharon Newman. Other survivors include: his father, Minton Newman, Sr. and wife Peggy; brother, Minton Newman, Jr. and wife Jean; sisters, Lori Cox and husband Eric, Wanda Wilkerson and husband Mike, and Charlotte Newman; sister-in-law Paula; father and mother- in-law, Bobby and Mary Beth McKamie; brother-in-law, Gary McKamie and wife Paula; sister in law Lisa Muttiah and husband Ranjan, numerous nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 11:00 am at Coker United Methodist Church. A reception will be held immediately following the service.
