Obituary

George H. Wessels, SMSgt. USAF Retired, went to be with the Lord on September 13, 2018. He was born March 10, 1926 on a farm in northwest Iowa to Henry and Grace Wessels. George entered the Army in July 1944 and served as a Browning Automatic Rifleman with the 75th Infantry Division in Belgium, Holland, Germany and France during WWII. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, two bronze campaign stars and several other medals and was honorably discharged in June 1946. In April 1950, he joined the United States Air Force and rose through the ranks to Branch Propulsion Chief in the aircraft maintenance wing at Sewart Air Force Base. While stationed at Randolph Air Force Base, George met and married the love of his life, Madeline Karnowski, and together they raised three children. He retired from the Air Force in June 1968 with over 20 years of service and was twice awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. He served his country faithfully during three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. George earned a B.A. degree in Sociology from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1972 and was employed by the Texas Department of Human Resources as a Quality Control Reviewer for nearly 14 years, retiring in December 1986. After he and his wife retired, they enjoyed spending time traveling in the U.S. and abroad. He loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Los Amigos Club and Celebration Committee at Holy Spirit. He was a member of the 75th Infantry Division Association and enjoyed attending their annual reunions. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Madeline; five sisters, Jenny Renken and Rose Anderson (both from Minnesota), Bertha Dagel and infant girl (both from Iowa), Henrietta Anderson (South Dakota); three brothers, Henry Jr., Heye, and John (all from Iowa); and son-in-law, David Fey. George is survived by his three children, Valerie Fey, Jamie Maihan, and George Wessels, Jr. (Nancy); four grandchildren, Jaclyn Fitzsimon (Jon), Keith Fey (Sarah), Kylie Wessels, and Avery Wessels; four great grandchildren, Kaden, Ty, Brooklyn and Bennett; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, brother and sisters-in-law.
