Obituary

George Philip Nelson, Jr. entered eternal rest in San Antonio, Texas January 24th, 2019. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 20, 1923, to George P. Nelson and Elizabeth Jane (Foster) Nelson. He graduated from Central Catholic High School ('40) and earned a BS in chemistry (1947), a BBA (1948), and an MBA (1966) from St. Mary's University.

George was a Naval Officer during World War II aboard the USS Ahrens and Osberg serving in both the European and Pacific theaters. Following separation from active duty, he served in the Naval Reserve retiring as a Captain after 25 years of service. George worked from 1951 - 1986 serving as an Intelligence Specialist & Resource Manager for the Electronic Security Command for the United States Air Force. He traveled the world, living in Germany for two years where his first child was born.

George was a charter member of the Joint Electronic Warfare Center, serving as the first Deputy for Management Support working directly with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired in the grade GM-15. George also served as a Board Member and Treasurer for Security Service Federal Credit Union from 1973 - 1987.

While George achieved his career objectives, his greatest pride was his family. He married his beloved wife Peggy (Bourret) in 1955 to whom he was devoted for 54 years until her death. Peggy was a Registered Nurse and, with George's help, also successfully operated a children's consignment shop during the 1980s. George enjoyed gardening, cooking, dancing, playing the piano and harmonica, reading the comics and telling jokes. He is survived by his daughters, Shari Heath and husband Kelly of Austin, Cathy Steves and husband Jimmie of San Antonio, Carol Rábago and husband Paul of Cedar Park, grandchildren Keri and Hunter Heath and twins James and Thomas Rábago, sister Patsy Crane and numerous nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
