Obituary

Chaplain Lt. Col. George Thomas Sturch (Retired, USAF), age 87, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. George was born March 1, 1932 in Clarksville, TX, to parents, George Dewey Sturch and Bessie Edwina Varley Sturch. After growing up, largely in Dallas, TX, he graduated from The University of Texas in 1953, and then joined the Air Force as a tanker pilot. In 1956, George attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving his Ordination to the Gospel Ministry in 1960. In 1967, after serving churches in Virginia and North Carolina, he reentered the Air Force as a Chaplain, serving another 23 years in eight more assignments, including Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star Medal for heroism. After his retirement from the Air Force, George settled in San Antonio and began a four-year association with Habitat for Humanity as a Volunteer Coordinator. He then answered a call to the ministry from First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, where he served as the Minister of Congregational Care for 17 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Clifton Sturch; sisters, Maurine Gaylor and Doris Rogers; and stepson-in-law, Kent Carpenter Williamson. George is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sandy Sturch; son, George Thomas Sturch Jr. and wife, Beverly Gayle; daughter, Teresa Lynn Berrier and husband, John David; daughter, Jennifer Mohon-Sturch and wife, Wendy; stepdaughter, Kristen Grace Morales and husband, Benjamin; stepdaughter, Karen Lee Williamson; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other extended family members.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
